New research reveals that Generation Z job candidates are often compelled to reject employment offers due to the expenses associated with beginning a new job, including commute and attire costs.

A survey of 2,000 UK youth aged 16 to 25, part of The Prince’s Trust NatWest Youth Index 2024, highlights that the rising cost of living is causing anxiety and limiting their career aspirations.

A notable difference in financial worries exists between genders, with 60% of young women anxious about the cost of living affecting their financial independence, in contrast to 45% of young men.

An increasing number of young individuals are seeking financial guidance on TikTok, with the platform seeing a rise in users looking for budgeting tips since last year.

The findings from the trust highlight the profound impact of the current economic climate on the confidence, well-being, and future aspirations of young prospective workers, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Overall, this economic situation is taking a toll on their mental health.

Jonathan Townsend, U.K. CEO of The Prince’s Trust, stated, “This trap, where poor mental health and employment struggles exacerbate each other, threatens to close in on this generation unless we take immediate action.”
