Bret Stephens and fellow columnist Gail Collins discussed Mayorkas’ pending impeachment, aid to Ukraine, and bipartisan Senate deal. Stephens, a conservative columnist, made several interesting remarks about House Republicans, each less flatter than the next.
Matt Gaetz takes the floor
Stephens and Collins attacked various issues in their op-ed, published in the New York Times. Stephens criticized Gaetz, who introduced a “Ukraine Fatigue” resolution in February 2023 to end “military and financial aid” to Ukraine. The columnist now writes, “Nothing matters more in Congress right now than helping Ukrainians get the arms they desperately need to defend themselves.”
“Gaetz and his fellow clowns”
Stephens continued by admitting he has “a rooting interest in Republicans losing their majority,” in a sense it would be a “divine retribution against Matt Gaetz and his fellow clowns.”
Mayorkas’ impeachment
DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas could soon become the first Cabinet official impeached in nearly 150 years. He is being accused of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” and Stephens also blasted the House GOP over this move, writing, “In a season of dumb ideas, it may yet be the dumbest. If policy differences are now going to become impeachable offenses — well, two can play the game.”
Mayorkas should “resign”
However, Stephens does think that the DHS Secretary should resign, adding, “If Biden loses in November, the border crisis that Mayorkas mysteriously refuses to call a crisis will have played a major part.”
“Stupid” Willis
Collins commented on Fani Willis’ admission of an affair but noted, “Don’t believe her behavior was crooked or evil — just extremely stupid.”
MAGA’s ideas
Stephens did not have anything to add but emphasized “extremely.” He argued that this and similar behaviors could strengthen Trump’s supporters’ ideas regarding the deep state and how the legal system is “out to get him.”
Drunk driver and the House Republicans
Stephens described the situation in House GOP and mentioned “sane” or moderate Republicans, saying, “Sane House Republicans are basically passengers in a car being driven at high speed by a drunk.” He added that no one dares to stop the driver because “who knows what he’ll do then?”
Mocking the Taylor Swift hysteria
The columnists also joked about the MAGA’s reaction to Taylor Swift, who in 2020 endorsed President Biden. Stephens added her boyfriend, NFL player Travis Kelce, Hunter Biden, and, of course, Jewish space lasers.
A conservative for Biden
Collins said it’s a good sign for Biden if a “conservative like you” wants him to win the 2024 election. Stephens’s response was short and straight to the point, “Only because I’ve considered the alternative.”
Increased criticism of House Republicans
In an op-ed, Former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff criticized efforts to impeach Mayorkas, writing that the House GOP has “failed to put forth evidence that meets the bar.”
Dershowitz agreed
Alan Dershowitz wrote for The Hill, “Whatever else Mayorkas may or may not have done, he has not committed bribery, treason, or high crimes and misdemeanors.” Dershowitz defended Trump during his Senate impeachment trial and, in 2023, spoke about Trump’s Manhattan case: “The effort is just to get him. New York’s is the worst case I’ve seen in 60 years of law.”
Liz Cheney also shared her views
Republican Cheney wrote in defiance, “Taylor Swift is a national treasure.” This comes after weeks of conspiracy theories, including Turning Point USA founder and Trump ally Charlie Kirk warning that “all the Swifties want is swift abortion.” Fox News host Jesse Watters declared Swift a possible “Pentagon psyop” and “a front for a covert political agenda.”
Cheney on House Republicans
Cheney said in 2023, “I think what you’re seeing right now and among the Republicans in the House is a direct result of the decisions that Kevin McCarthy made to embrace Donald Trump, to embrace the most radical and extreme members of our party, that elevate them.” During an appearance on Face the Nation, Cheney continued, “So it’s not a surprise that we are where we are, but it’s a disgrace, and it’s an embarrassment.”
