South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem told CNN’s Dana Bash that the bipartisan deal is “terrible” while stating “Texas should stand their ground.” The “State of the Union” host challenged the Governor’s statements.
Biden needs to take action
Noem told on “State of the Union” that “The senators are really good at spinning a story to make themselves look good.” She continued, “What I would say is that I always look for someone who’s willing to take action, and President Biden has all the authority he needs to take action today,” Noem said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Bash pressed
The reporter wondered why the government shouldn’t work toward better asylum programs, to which Noem responded, “I think that he would have the ability to fix that broken immigration policy if the president could show that he was acting in good faith. Make an announcement that you’re changing your policies, you’re reallocating resources, and you’re going to start protecting the United States of America.”
Noem and Bash clashed over SCOTUS’ ruling
Noem defended Governor Greg Abbott and called Texas to “stand their ground.” The South Dakota Governor continued, “They should enforce their state law and go back to the constitutional rights that they’ve been granted to protect their state sovereignty.” The U.S. Supreme Court ordered Texas to allow the U.S. Border Control to remove razor wire.
“Partisan bickering”
The Governor also criticized the invasion of the country, as she called it, and said, “You’d have Republicans coming down to the White House asking that to be partners on fixing our immigration policies. Instead, what we’ve got is this partisan bickering back and forth and no solutions while people invade our country.”
“Trump is exactly right”
While Dash said that Biden is negotiating and he cannot act without Congress, Noem noted that “President Trump is exactly right,” elaborating, “to look at Congress and expect them to pass a bill when they failed for decades to do this. And then to say we have to accept this poison pill of a bill that — it essentially codifies illegal immigration, what it would do is put into statute that people can now come here illegally, and it’s just a terrible bill.”
Will things escalate?
Dash asked Noem if she worried the Texas border crisis might escalate. The South Dakota Governor stated, “We don’t know where this will escalate. We don’t know what the president will do.”
“Invasion” is happening
Noem continued, “We don’t know how he’ll try to manipulate our soldiers or if he will even defend our country from this invasion that is happening.” Still, Noem is standing with Abbott.
Noem’s offer
Noem offered to deliver razor wire to Governor Abbott via car. She told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum, “Governor Abbott has done the exact right thing,” adding, ” I’ll drive him more razor wire from South Dakota if I have to for him to do his job.”
Bold claims
“Our Border Patrol agents do not support what President Biden is doing,” Noem said while talking to MacCallum. “Our ICE agents on the ground do not support what President Biden is doing. Democrats in the country do not support what President Biden is doing at the southern border, and they disagree with him fundamentally.”
Biden’s “out of touch”
While on Fox News, the Republican Governor said the president was “out of touch.” She continued, “He’s remaking this country—We will be Europe within a year or two if we allow President Biden to continue this invasion of our country.”
“We must stand up”
“The inhumanity of the Biden policies is destroying America, and I’d never thought in my life that I could see a country change as fast as it has,” Noem, who is still allegedly considered to be one of Trump’s running mates, stated. She added, “So it is time that we stand shoulder to shoulder, and we stand up now to make sure we protect the future of this country.”
Noem on X
On Monday, January 29, Noem wrote, “The border deal would have done NOTHING to secure the border. In fact, it would have codified the open border!” She continued, “This is why the American people don’t trust the Washington establishment. Joe Biden doesn’t need a deal to secure the border TODAY.” In another post, she added the full CNN interview.
The President’s promise
President Biden vowed to close the border if Congress passed the bipartisan deal. A statement released Friday night said what’s being negotiated in the Senate would be “the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country.” President added, “And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”
Trump opposes
The former president, however, told during a Las Vegas rally, “As the leader of our party, there is zero chance I will support this horrible open borders betrayal of America.” He continued, “I’ll fight it all the way. A lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, they’re blaming it on me. I say that’s okay. Please blame it on me. Please.”
“Catastrophe waiting to happen”
Trump, the likely GOP nominee in the 2024 elections, wrote on Truth Social, “We have a catastrophe waiting to happen. It is the WORST BORDER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD, an open wound in our once great Country. TERRORISTS ARE POURING IN, UNCHECKED, FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. There is now a 100% chance that there will be MAJOR TERROR ATTACKS IN THE USA. CLOSE THE BORDER!” Still, Trump is against the bill.
