Fani Willis, Fulton County District Attorney, overseeing the investigation into former President Donald Trump’s Georgia election interference, faces an ethics complaint. The complaint stems from her office’s alleged failure to comply with a public records request.
Allegations of Affair
Willis, at the helm of the high-profile case against Trump, is embroiled in controversy following accusations of an affair with a special prosecutor she appointed, Nathan Wade.
Election Meddling Indictment
Trump, along with 18 others, is indicted on multiple counts related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Politically Motivated Attack
The former president has pleaded not guilty, dismissing all 13 charges as a politically motivated attack. He asserts that Democrats are attempting to damage his position as the Republican front-runner for the 2024 presidential nominee.
Case Dismissal Request
Michael Roman, a co-defendant and former Trump staffer, submitted a motion against Willis on January 8, requesting the dismissal of his case.
Personal Benefits
Roman alleges that Willis has personally benefited from the situation by going on vacations with Wade, and since Wade funded these trips, he argues that Willis is enjoying the benefits of public funds she approved.
Conflict of Interest
This alleged conflict of interest, according to Roman, warrants the dismissal of the case.
White House Meetings
Roman also claimed in the filing that meetings occurred between White House staff and Wade in 2022.
Racial Bias
Willis previously dismissed the accusations, arguing that her detractors were invoking racial bias by specifically targeting Wade, who is African American.
Ethics Violations
Greg Mantell, founder of Investigative News Service, submitted a complaint to the Fulton County Board of Ethics on Tuesday in which he accused Willis of multiple ethics violations related to the filing.
Records Withholding Accusations
He accused Willis of failing to provide detailed expense reports and records related to payments to Wade and a substantial grant received by the Department of Justice.
Unethical Actions
Mantell claimed that the office had furnished only two out of three employment contracts for Wade and asserted that his other requests had been rejected. He expressed his belief that the refusal to release these records was an attempt to conceal unethical actions.
“Walking Ethics Violation”
Mantell said, “Ms. Willis is a walking ethics violation. She has violated so many sections of the Ethics Code it would be easier for me to state what sections she hasn’t violated rather than the sections she has.”
Response from Ethics Board
The Fulton County Board of Ethics on Thursday acknowledged Mantell’s complaint and plans to hold a preliminary hearing to assess the validity of these allegations. A formal hearing may follow if sufficient evidence of an ethics violation is found.
Additional Requests Ignored
Just the News, a news outlet, reported on Friday that its request for records concerning meetings and communications between Willis or Wade with White House or Justice Department officials had been disregarded.
Open Records Act
The news outlet proceeded to file a complaint with Georgia Attorney General Christopher M. Carr, alleging that Willis’s office had failed to meet the three-day deadline for responding to the request as mandated by the Open Records Act.
Legislative Action
In response to these unfolding events, Georgia state Senate Republicans proposed forming a special committee to investigate the misconduct allegations.
Impeachment Proposal
Concurrently, Republican state Representative Charlice Byrd put forward a resolution to impeach Willis.
“Political Gain”
On Friday, Byrd posted a statement from the Georgia House of Representatives on X, declaring that he introduced articles of impeachment against Willis because “She has used her office not to pursue justice but for political gain.”
Trump Joins Roman
Trump also aligned himself with Roman on Thursday in an attempt to have Willis, special prosecutor Nathan Wade, and their respective offices removed from the case.
Judge Sets Response Deadline
Meanwhile, Judge Scott McAfee has directed Willis to provide a response to the allegations by February 2 and has set a hearing for February 15.
