A United Nations women’s charity is facing criticism following their selection of a transgender model to represent British women.
17 Groups Object to UN Women UK’s Trans Model Appointment
At least 17 women’s rights organizations have objected to the United Nations Women UK’s November appointment of Munroe Bergdorf, a 36-year-old transgender model and broadcaster, as a “UK champion.”
Bergdorf Activism Contradicts the Group’s Vision
These groups, including Fair Play for Women, Sex Matters, Transgender Trend, and the Women’s Rights Network, conveyed their unease in a joint letter. They criticized the selection of Bergdorf, arguing that her activism does not align with the group’s vision of women’s advocacy.
“Dismay and Disappointment at the Appointment”
The letter from the groups, as highlighted by Fair Play for Women, states, “We wish to register our dismay and disappointment at the appointment of a male activist, Munroe Bergdorf, as a UN Women UK champion. The female population of the UK is more than 33 million, yet you have ignored every one of us and chosen a male.”
“Women’s Ambassador Should be a Female”
The letter concluded, “Your nomination for a women’s ambassador should be a female who is willing and determined to speak about the issues affecting women and girls. Munroe Bergdorf is unsuitable in every regard.”.
Bergdorf’s Advocacy Background
Munroe Bergdorf, who also serves as a contributing editor at British Vogue, previously worked as an advocate for UN Women UK in 2019 and has been an active supporter of the “Draw a Line” campaign, which aims to end violence against women and girls.
L’Oreal Drops, Then Rehires Munroe Bergdorf over Controversial Post
In 2017, cosmetic giant L’Oreal dropped her due to a post where she responded to the violence of white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, by stating that all whites were racist. Three years later, she was rehired.
Facebook Post about White People
Bergdorf’s 2017 Facebook post noted, “Honestly I don’t have energy to talk about the racial violence of white people any more. Yes, ALL white people.”
Compelled to Apologize
Bergdorf was also compelled to apologize when old social media messages resurfaced, including one from 2012 where she referred to a Twitter follower as a “hairy barren lesbian” and expressed a desire to “g..y bash” a TV star.
Harmful Debates Endanger Trans Lives
After the murder of trans teenager Brianna Ghey in February 2023, Bergdorf stated that harmful debates contribute to trans individuals “paying with their lives.” Bergdorf emphasized that the “toxic environment” and “silly debates” prevalent in the UK are endangering trans people.
Bergdorf’s Response to the Appointment
Upon accepting the role, Bergdorf expressed her dedication, “I’m incredibly proud to step into my new role as a UN Women UK Champion. It’s a responsibility that I don’t take lightly.”
Advocacy for Women, Transphobia, and Inequality
Bergdorf emphasized her commitment to advocating for all women and girls, focusing on combating misogyny, transphobia, and gender-based inequality in the UK.
