District Attorney Fani Willis’s relationship with Special Counsel Nathan Wade was met with phone records that endangered their claims of the romance timeline.
More questions

The new eight-page affidavit from February 23 puts in question Willis and Wade’s testimonies regarding the beginning of their romance. The filing by attorneys for Donald Trump claims that Wade appeared to make at least 35 visits to the Hapeville neighborhood where Fani Willis lived. All the visits happened between April 1, 2021, and November 30, 2021, before Willis hired Wade.
Wade’s phone revealed his location

The affidavit says that Wade’s phone was “connected for an extended period” to the cell towers nearest Willis’ apartment. Defense investigator Charles Mittelstadt revealed that his probe was “conservative” and added that he emphasized only those times when Wade’s phone was “stationary and not in transit.”
Willis’s and Wade’s claims

While the phone records seem to show that the two were involved throughout 2021, Wade and Willis insisted they began their relationship in early 2022 and ended it during the summer of 2023. Wade also testified that he only visited the Hapeville condo ten times before he was hired, and he “never” spent time there, Willis’ testimony confirmed.
Wade insists that he was telling the truth

When Trump’s attorney, Steve Sadow, asked about the revelations, the Special Counsel dismissed it, and Sadow asked him about the phone records, “They’d be wrong?” Wade confirmed, “If phone records reflected that, yes, sir. They’d be wrong.”
Wade’s defense

The Special counsel said, “The Porsche experience is there. The airport is there. Delta Air Lines is headquartered there. Restaurants there.” Willis noted that Wade never spent the night, adding that the only people who stay overnight are her children.
Mittelstadt’s revelationsns

The investigators said in the affidavit that there were “over 2,000 voice calls and just under 12,000 interactions” between the DA and the prosecutor during the 11 months. He added that most calls happened in the evening hours.
Specific dates

Mittelstadt focused “a deeper analysis on two specific dates: September 11-12, 2021 (before I understand Mr. Wade was hired) and November 29-30, 2021 (prior to what I understand was the in-court testimony that the romantic relationship began in 2022).”
Mittelstadt’s method

Mittelstadt said he used the online tool CellHawk to specify Wade’s movement in 2021. The investigation shared, “CellHawk is considered by law enforcement to be the gold standard in cellphone records analytics” and added the tool is used by law enforcement throughout the U.S.
Willis responded to the filing

“The records do nothing more than demonstrate that Special Prosecutor Wade’s telephone was located somewhere within a densely populated multiple-mile radius where various residences, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and other businesses are located,” Willis’ motion said.
“The records do not prove” relationship

“The records do not prove, in any way, the content of the communications between Special Prosecutor Wade and District Attorney Willis; they do not prove that Special Prosecutor Wade was ever at any particular location or address; they do not prove that Special Prosecutor Wade and District Attorney Willis were ever in the same place during any of the times listed,” the filing continued.
Ex-Willis’s friend exposed the relationship

Robin Yeartie, a former friend of Fani Willis, said that the relationship between Willis and Wade began in 2019. She claimed there was “no doubt” that they were still a couple in March 2022 when they last spoke. Wade said his romance with Willis didn’t begin until 2022, after he started work on the Trump case.
If Willis gets disqualified

Trump and his co-defendant in the Georgia case, Michael Roman, are working on removing Williis from the case. Roman’s lawyers have argued that Willis and Wade have “enriched themselves off this case.” If Willis gets disqualified, the case could not only face delay in finding a new prosecutor, but if Willis appealed and won the appeal, it would go back to her.
