Pastor Steven Gray, hailing from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, shared his perspective at this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference, emphasizing America’s need for both Donald Trump and Jesus Christ.
Spiritual-Political Vision
He stated, “I’m trying to mix the spiritual with the political,” while distributing a press packet from his worn leather bag. “My church is doing great — everything’s doing great — I felt like just, this is what I should do now, is lean into taking the spiritual and mixing [in] the political.”
Pastor Endorses Trump
When asked by Raw Story, “Does America need Jesus more or Trump more?” Gray offered his viewpoint: “This will just have to be my plain opinion, okay? In my plain opinion, I am a big supporter of Trump.”
Spiritual vs. Political Needs
“I think the spiritual is going to be long term, the political is short term: We need him now. The spiritual, we got, you know, we can work into it,” he explained.
America’s Spiritual Sickness
Reflecting on an advertisement for Trump that featured a series of key points, the final one resonated with him the most, questioning whether America is “spiritually sick?”
“That’s in my lane. I’m not in the other lanes, but that’s in my lane,” the pastor elaborated.
Merging Jesus with Trump
“He is one of the big reasons I’m doing this, because I think it needs to be combined,” Gray commented on the synergy between Jesus and Trump. “And I think he’s a candidate that would not oppose the political and the spiritual. We need ’em both.”
Religious Voices Echo at Event
Notably, Gray wasn’t the only pastor at the event, nor the only one speaking about faith. Echoing similar sentiments, Former Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) shared his vision of Christian Nationalism with Steve Bannon on his show at CPAC.
Religious Message
Addressing a gathering of approximately 100 people, Brat shared his beliefs, stating, “God’s put a special hand on this country. There’s nothing wrong with that. Don’t be ashamed of that. Get out, teach your kids that.”
Trump and Biden’s Divine Image
Post his appearance on Bannon’s show, when interviewed by Raw Story, he expressed, “God is with everybody that he made in his own image,” which includes Trump, and acknowledged that God is also “with” President Joe Biden.
Alarming View on the Left
Joseph Daniels, a Christian from Naperville, Illinois, voiced his concerns: “The left is so demonic now, bro.”
Liberal Influence on Youth
Daniels accused liberals of “trying to sexualize children” and simultaneously “trying to wipe out the next generation with abortion and Planned Parenthood and the organ harvesting trade.”
“There’s a lot of evil stuff going on. A lot. It’s really, really sad.”
Disappointment with Trump
Further expressing his disappointment, he added, “Trump let me down with not pardoning Julian Assange. Speaker Johnson’s weak, bro. He hasn’t done much. He’s just like McCarthy.”
Trump or Jesus?
Evan Robey, an 18-year-old student at the University of Georgia, faced a choice between Trump and Jesus. Opting for the latter, he nonetheless expressed to Raw Story, “Trump is the only way for our country.”
Defense of Trump’s Spirituality
He also criticized the media’s scrutiny of Trump’s faith, remarking, “There are a bunch of liberals trying to determine whether or not Trump is a Christian in all these articles, like, ‘Trump doesn’t exhibit the values of Christianity.’ I’m like, ‘How the hell do they know?’ That’s actually ridiculous.”
Student Supports Trump
When Raw Story brought up the “Access Hollywood” tape where Trump mentioned he could sexually assault women without repercussions due to his celebrity status, Robey countered, “I disagree with that, because it’s about the policy.”
Trump’s Border and Job Policies
“And look at everything Donald Trump stands for: He stands for closing our borders. He stands for bringing back the American values. He wants us to have jobs,” he added. “Basically, it’s the whole help your neighbor mentality that we have learned through Christ It’s less about what you say and more about what you do. That’s the heart of Christianity.”
Jesus Over Trump
Bishop Joseph Strickland, when asked to choose between Jesus and Trump, simply said, “Jesus,” and added, “Pastors can get off track, too. Believe me.”
