Campaign group Republicans for Ukraine presented their talking points for the discharge petition against Speakrt Johnson. Now, House Democrats have confirmed they plan to introduce the same measure and force the House vote.
“Coming Soon”
Bill Pascrell Jr., a Democrat from New Jersey and the Ranking Member on the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee, confirmed on X, “Coming soon: Democrats will introduce a discharge petition to bring Ukraine funding to the House floor. I will be on line to sign it. The votes are there.”
Asking for Republicans to join
The Democrat asked on X, “Are there a dozen Republicans with a shred of courage to sign it and help Ukraine survive? Stay tuned.” The Congresman’s post from February 22 gained significant attention, especially since it was posted only days after lifelong Republicans under Republicans for Ukraine shared their 60-second ad.
Johnson did not bring the vote to the House
After the Senate passed a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill with assistance for Ukraine and Israel on February 13, House Speaker Johnson said he had no plans to bring the bill to the floor. In his explanation, the Louisana Republican claimed, “The Senate’s foreign aid bill is silent on the most pressing issue facing our country.”
Schumer called out Johnson from Ukraine
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer directly challenged House Speaker Mike Johnson during a surprising visit to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Schumer told reporters in Lviv, “The weight of history is on his shoulders,” adding, “If he turns his back on history, he will regret it in future years.”
Schumer confirmed his message for Johnson
Schumer even said he was in Ukraine “to talk directly to Speaker Johnson,” adding, “Speaker Johnson, history is looking down upon you, looking over your shoulder. Rise to the occasion.”
Schumer warned Johnson of Trump
Senate Majority Leader warned Johnson not to “let blind obeisance to Donald Trump prohibit you or your colleagues from voting for this package.”Schumer visited fresh graves and stated, “We saw the faces of the brave men and women who had lost their lives — some of whom had lost their lives, inevitably, because they didn’t have all the ammunition that they needed.”
Johnson “won’t be rushed”
After some Republicans expressed their dissatisfaction with Johnson and discussed taking measures, he stated he “won’t be rushed” into deciding whether to bring the bill to the House for a vote. With a razor-thin majority, one of the smallest in history, the bill would likely pass the House.
Republicans for Ukraine
The group launched a campaign with a video ad and a message, “Republicans have a chance to make history, but only if they get to vote. That’s why they should sign a discharge petition—it only takes four, but there’s safety in numbers. These ten members have been leaders on Ukraine and American national security in the past, and it’s time for them to be leaders again.”
The House Republicans likely to vote for the bill
Ten House Republicans likely to vote with Democrats and Republicans for Ukraine were listed, including Ken Buck from Colorado, Mike Gallagher from Wisconsin, Mike Turner from Ohio, and others. The names were listed on the campaign website, as well as the ad showing “lifelong Republican voters” speaking up to support Ukraine aid.
“Help defeat Putin”
Gunner Ramer, a Republicans for Ukraine spokesperson, told Newsweek that the party always “prided itself on standing up to dictators and leading the free world.” Ramer added that many House Republicans still believe in these principles and ” the critical issue in the world is whether free countries will help defeat Putin in Ukraine.”
Making history
The spokesperson stated that the House GOP has a chance to “make history,” reminding that “it only takes four, but there’s safety in numbers.” Ramer added that ten listed House Republicans were “leaders on Ukraine and American national security in the past, and it’s time for them to be leaders again.”
Johnson is facing ousting threats from the far right
The House Speaker will have to make what is likely the most challenging decision in his work life since the government shutdown is looming, and he will either allow it or work with House Democrats. The latter cost former Speaker Kevin McCarthy his position. It does not help that Johnson rejected a bipartisan border deal that also covered foreign aid. Will House Democrats save him if he makes the deal remains a question.
