According to Insider, Save America PAC spent $2.3 million in 2023 for legal fees in two firms that represented Ivanka Trump. Additionally, $5.3 million was reportedly spent on Robert & Robert, a law firm representing Trump’s oldest children, Ivanka, Eric, and Don Jr.

The former president founded this PAC after leaving the office following the 2020 election loss. It is set as a fundraising and political committee. Still, Insider reports that a portion of the spending went to “defend Ivanka from the civil fraud trial that alleged Trump and his adult children systematically committed fraud by manipulating the value of their properties in order to get more favorable tax and loan treatment.”

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) research director Robert Maguire told Insider, “In 2020, he raised tens of millions of dollars for the PAC by making baseless claims of a stolen election and casting the PAC as an ‘Official Election Defense Fund.”

“Since then, the committee has largely become a vehicle for paying his, his family’s, and his associates’ legal bills while also channeling tens of millions to a pro-Trump super PAC,” Maguire added.

“Unique” situation

Michael Farina of Robert & Robert wrote in a March 2023 filing, “Ms. Trump’s factual and legal defenses are unique, both because the legal theory and factual allegations made against her are different, and because she left the company in January 2017.” Ivanka Trump was not a defendant in the alleged fraud case, though she had to appear as a witness.

Finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission show that Trump’s political action committees, Save America PAC and Make America Great Again PAC, spent almost $50 million on legal fees. The New York Times reported last summer that after paying the legal bills, “Trump’s PAC is nearly broke.”

Maguire from the CREW told Insider that FEC’s Republican commissioners refused to take legal actions over alleged PAC spending violations, “The FEC’s Republican commissioners have voted against every single instance where the agency’s own nonpartisan lawyers have found reason to believe Trump or his committees committed violations.”

Nikki Haley spoke about the allegations, stating, “Get ready to spend more campaign dollars on legal fees because those court cases have just started. He’s got two in March, and they go out for the rest of the year.”

“Unconscionable”

Haley added, “It is unconscionable to me that a candidate would spend $50 million in legal fees. It explains why he’s not doing many rallies. He doesn’t have the money to do it.”

The filing alleges that Trump paid at least  50 law firms for legal-related services in 2023. This includes representations in Florida, D.C., Georgia, and New York, as well as civil cases in New York brought by E. Jean Carroll and AG Laetitia James. Donor funds reportedly paid $2 million.
