Marjorie Taylor Greene Equates Biden’s Inauguration Security With Jan 6 Insurrection

On Tuesday, Marjorie Taylor Greene and a group of her House Republican colleagues gave a press conference about their new resolution claiming that Trump is not an insurrectionist. Greene drew flak for comparing the Jan 6 riot to the presence of the National Guard at Biden’s inauguration.

“The American people who pay for elections with their tax dollars actually own the elections,” Greene claimed, “and have the right to care about their elections, election integrity, and the results of their elections.”

Greene argued that the American people were exercising their rights “when they came to Washington and protested.” Greene has repeatedly downplayed and defended the Jan 6 insurrection attempt, calling it “a little riot” in July 2022.

“All of you call it an insurrection,” Greene complained at Tuesday’s press conference. “Then, when Joe Biden was inaugurated and this entire Capitol complex was surrounded with 30,000 National Guard troops, none of you stood there and called that an insurrection. Oh, no. You all stayed silent.”

In fact, during his inauguration, Biden had 25,000 troops in Washington, DC. The initial number was 7,500, which was increased after the Jan 6 attack.

Historical precedent

Trump had 7,500 National Guard members stationed in the city during his inauguration in 2017. In 2009, Barack Obama had 9,300 members.

The reason Biden needed so many National Guard members at his inauguration was due to the continued threat of violence from the groups that had stormed the Capitol weeks earlier. “Rep. Taylor Greene,” Colby Hall wrote in Mediaite, “is simply too stupid to understand that, however.”

Violent events

The Jan 6 riot led to five deaths, and over 140 Capitol officers were injured. As of the third anniversary of the attack, over 1,265 individuals have been charged with crimes relating to their participation in the riot.

Greene has repeatedly called those sentenced for Jan 6 crimes “political prisoners.” According to the New Republic, she argued they were following “what our Declaration of Independence says … to overthrow tyrants.”

Concerning comment

In December 2022, Greene told Republicans at a New York event that if she had organized the Jan 6 riot, “it would have been armed,” and “we would have won.” After facing sharp criticism, she claimed she was just making a “sarcastic joke” — simply “making fun of Joe Biden and the Democrats.”

Not the first time

In October 2023, Greene called a peaceful protest at the Capitol by Jewish American peace activists an “insurrection.” The activists were calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Over 500 were arrested by Capitol Police.

Greene has repeatedly made headlines for her controversial, extreme, and occasionally plain incorrect comments. In November, she sarcastically said Democratic Representative Rosa DeLauro “probably just forgot that a few hours ago she voted for the continuing resolution that will extend the budget, and we are not on the verge of a shutdown.”

“It may be that the gentlelady doesn’t know that there is another body attached to the U.S. Congress called the United States Senate, and they have to vote on the continuing resolution,” DeLauro hit back. “And when they vote on it, we’ll find out what they do with regard to this continuing resolution passed by the House.”

Another error

Earlier in November, Greene included the removal of a statue of Robert E. Lee in her complaint about “Communist Democrats” attempting to erase American “culture, way of life, and history” by removing monuments to the Founding Fathers. Democratic Representative Chellie Pingree informed her, “Robert E. Lee was not actually one of the Founding Fathers — he was a general of the Confederacy.”

Counting problems

Greene has also previously been mocked for being unable to read a large number. “There is one million, five hundred and twenty-four, five hundred and twenty-four and four hundred eighty-one thous— this is over one million,” she said.
