Former President Trump slammed mail-in voting, but Fox News host Laura Ingraham cleverly reminded him of his previous victory, and it turned into a complete mess, not only for Trump but for the Republican party.
Trump at the town hall meeting
Trump joined Fox News’ Laura Ingraham in a pre-taped town hall meeting in Greenville, South Carolina on February 20. The host asked Trump about mail-in ballots, and Trump shared his concerns, only to be destroyed by facts.
It is a “fraud”
The host asked, “What are you going to do to make sure we don’t have problems going forward?” Trump replied, “If you have mail-in voting, you automatically have fraud.” Just a day prior, Ingraham defended Trump and even asked, “Is Donald Trump at risk of being America’s first real political prisoner?” so this was a malicious question.
A reminder
Ingraham recalled Trump’s Florida victory and informed the former president, “OK, well, there’s mail-in voting in Florida, and you won huge.” Trump won over Biden in Florida by approximately 371,686 votes, and around 46 percent of voters used absentee or mail-in ballots, according to Pew Research data.
The mid-terms should have been a sign
The Republican party encouraged voters to use mail-in voting after the disappointing 2022 midterm results. But, Trump sent mixed messages against and for mail-in voting and even blamed this system for his 2020 loss. Ironically, in 2020, Trump cast a vote-by-mail ballot in Florida.
Critics blasted Trump
Lincoln Project’s Rick Wilson shared on X, “Way to shave off a percent or two, Donnie. Keep it up.” Bradley P. Moss joked, “I wholeheartedly endorse Republicans waiting until Election Day to vote. Do not vote early. Do not vote by mail. Wait wait wait.”
Things soon got juicier
An X user whose handle is @AntiToxicPeople wrote, “He is so insane and self-destructive.” Another person, @TrumpsTaxes, added, “As a Democrat who enjoys winning a lot of elections, there are few things I love more than Trump trashing mail-in voting.”
Listen to Trump
Alex Cole from Newsitics shared, “As a Democrat, I hope all Republicans listen to Trump and never vote by mail.” Pollster and political consultant Frank Luntz reminded people, “Donald Trump voted by mail in the 2020 election.”
Trump voted in August, but…
Despite using the system to cast his in-mail vote in August 2020, in April, Trump complained on then-Twitter, “‘GET RID OF BALLOT HARVESTING, IT IS RAMPANT WITH FRAUD. THE USA MUST HAVE VOTER I.D., THE ONLY WAY TO GET AN HONEST COUNT!”
Vote on Election Day, instead
“Republicans — are you listening? ONLY vote on Election Day. That’s it. Don’t worry if you have some unforeseen emergency that day, you’ll be fine. Totally. Believe me,” shared @JoJoFromJerz.
Filipkowski commented
The conservative Never-Trump lawyer explained, “Basically, Republicans, if you vote by mail, the Deep State is probably going to steal it. Best to wait for Election Day. Don’t mind the lines. And if one of those canvassers comes to your door trying to get you to do it, good chance they work for Soros and are tricking you.”
More people joined
“It’s not talked about enough how Trump is just … deeply and genuinely stupid,” said Matthew Rein of lawdems.org, while @JoshGreenberg27 commented, “I hope he never stops saying this. Shut up, Laura.”
Trump compared himself to Navalny, again
“It’s a form of Navalny, it’s a form of communism or fascism,” Trump told the Fox host, and continued, “Navalny was a very sad situation. And he’s very brave, he was a very brave guy … But it’s happening in our country, too. We are turning into a communist country in many ways.” Trump previously compared himself to Navalny in a TruthSocial post.
Indictments vs. sudden death
Alexei Navalny died suddenly in a Russian prison. He was Putin’s top opponent, but all Trump had to add, “I got indicted four times, I have eight or nine trials, all because of the fact that I’m in politics,” adding, “They indicted me on things that are so ridiculous.”
“Where did this water come from?”
“After that last question, I need a drink. Where the hell did this water come from? Where did this water come from?” Trump asked the host following a break after the inquiries related to the death of Russia’s opposition leader. Trump did not mention Putin, despite many Republicans blaming the Russian president for Navalny’s untimely death.
