In a fiery speech at a January 5 rally in Mason City, Iowa, Trump urged voters to react if they see “bags of cr…p” and warned, “2024 is our final battle.”
Continuing election denial narrative

Trump repeated baseless claims that the 2020 election had been stolen and told his supporters, “We’re not going to let it happen again.” The former president and GOP’s likely candidate for the 2024 elections shared, “I just hope we get fair treatment.” Trump continued, “Because if we don’t, our country’s in big trouble. Does everybody understand what I’m’ saying?” he said while referring to the SCOTUS’ pending Colorado decision.
Things went from bad to worse

The former president continued, “You should all stay in those voting booths. You should stay there and watch it. If you see bags of c..p coming into the voting areas, you’ve got to stop it. You can’t let it happen because these guys are crooked as hell. They know how to cheat.”
Final battle

Trump added, “We will fight for America like no one has ever fought before,” and warned, “2024 is our final battle.” Previously, he told Iowa voters to “guard the vote.”
December speech

In December 2023, Trump told his Iowa supporters, “You should go into Detroit, and you should go into Philadelphia, and you should go into some of these places, Atlanta, and you should go into some of these places, and we’ve got to watch those votes when they come in.”
The latest speech went viral

The speech from the Iowa rally on January 5 went viral, and many people wondered if Trump stepped over the line. “He’s intimidating voters and calling American citizens ‘bags of cr…p” 10 months out from the election. No one has ever been more worthy of being disqualified from appearing on the ballot than this literal pos,” wrote an account whose handle is Andrew—Author of America Rises On Substack—Wortman.
If you want to get arrested…

“I mean, if voters want to get arrested for obstructing others’ ability to cast a ballot, sure, do that. I wouldn’t recommend it,” wrote Bradley P. Moss, internet personality. Bill DeMayo simply shared on X, “This sounds like voter intimidation.”
Trump equals God

Politico spoke to rally attendees in Clinton, Iowa, and one of them, Jim Voss, a man in his 60s, said, “We think [Trump’s] the only one besides God that’s going to get us out of the hell hole that we’re in right now.”
Trump asked people to vote

In Clinton, the former president was initially reserved, asking people, “Don’t stay home, just please. The polls are showing we’re going to win by a lot. The worst thing you can do is say, ‘Let’s just stay home, Alice. Let’s watch it on television.’ We don’t want to do that.”
Trump on the Civil War

One of Trump’s strangest moments in Clinton was unrelated to voting or the 2024 election. Trump mentioned the Civil War and said, “I’m so attracted to seeing it. There was something that could’ve been negotiated… Abraham Lincoln, if he negotiated it, we wouldn’t know who Lincoln was. He wouldn’t have been the Abraham Lincoln. But that would’ve been ok.”
Trashing E. Jean Carroll

The former president was found liable for assault and defamation of the columnist and writer E. Jean Carroll. He told his supporters, “If I didn’t run or were in fifth place or something, I would have had no indictments. This is all political stuff, including the women’s stuff. The Bergdorf Goodman.”
The second civil trial to start this month

The Second Circuit ruled that Trump could not use presidential immunity to defend against the defamation allegation brought by E. Jean Carroll. He was ordered by a jury to pay Carroll $83.3 million for defamation.
New details about Trump’s inaction on January 6

ABC News reported that Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team discovered previously lesser-known details about Trump’s alleged lack of actions to stop January 6 rioters. According to the report, Trump’s former deputy chief of staff, Dan Scavino, said Trump “was just not interested” in stopping the attack on the Capitol.
