Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, slammed Trump’s Truth Social claims that presidents can close the border with no need for legislation. Roy also used Trump’s words to ask questions about the former president’s immigration decisions.
House Republicans against the bill
President Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell praised the bipartisan bill. But, House Republicans, led by Speaker Johnson, said the bill was “dead on arrival” before and after the text was revealed.
Trump raged on Truth Social
The likely GOP nominee for the 2024 election wrote on Truth Social, “Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill.” He also told Dan Bongino that the bill would harm Senator Lankford’s career. The Senator helped negotiate the bill and urged fellow lawmakers to pass the legislation.
Trump raged some more
Trump further wrote on Truth Social, “This Bill is a great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party. It takes the HORRIBLE JOB the Democrats have done on Immigration and the Border, absolves them, and puts it all squarely on the shoulders of Republicans.” He continued, “Don’t be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape or form!”
Roy had a message for Trump
Trump also said, “ALL A PRESIDENT HAS TO DO IS SAY, “CLOSE THE BORDER,” AND THE BORDER WILL BE CLOSED. A COSTLY NEW BILL IS NOT NECESSARY!” But Roy disagreed, “No, we’re not just going to pass the buck and say that, ‘Oh, any president can walk in and secure the border.'” That’s when the Texas Republican recalled Trump’s border failures.
Roy calls out Trump
“I saw former President Trump make that allegation today on one of his social media posts: ‘All a president has to do is declare the border is closed, and it’s closed,'” Roy reminded, and continued, “Well, with all due respect, that didn’t happen in 2017, ’18, ’19 and ’20. There were millions of people that came into the United States during those four years.”
Not the first time Roy blasted Trump
In January, the Texas Republican, who supported DeSantis during his efforts to get the GOP nomination, said on Fox News, “I would acknowledge President Trump failed, along with Republican’s (former speaker) Paul Ryan and the guys. They failed in 2018 to actually move a border security bill to tighten this so that we weren’t dealing with this crisis right now. They failed to actually get the wall built.”
That’s why he was Team DeSantis
Roy resumed, “President Trump signed 12 continuing resolutions after he said he would never sign another one if they didn’t give him the money to finish building the wall. Look, this stuff matters. It adds up. I call balls and strikes. This is not hard. This is why I support Governor DeSantis, who has delivered better than any politician I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.”
Still, Roy had some kind words for the Trump administration
After he blasted Trump’s claims about the executive orders, Roy told fellow lawmakers, “What did happen was that that administration, led by the president, led by people who believe in America, led by strong leaders at (the Department of Homeland Security), they worked to secure the border, they worked to get those numbers down.”
Biden blames Trump for the border deal’s collapse
Biden praised the bipartisan deal and stated, “Now, all indications are this bill won’t even move forward to the Senate floor,” Biden said, adding, “Why? A simple reason: Donald Trump.”
Weaponizing the issue
The president continued, “Because Donald Trump thinks it’s bad for him politically, even though it helps the country.” Biden added, “He’d rather weaponize the issue than actually solve it.”
Biden’s threat
“Every day between now and November, the American people are gonna know that the only reason the border is not secure is Donald Trump and his MAGA Republican friends,” Biden added.
Schumer’s message to Johnson
Senate Majority Leader told on MSNBC, “I say to Speaker Johnson: Don’t let the 30 hard-right people in the House who are extreme — they wanted us to default, they wanted the government not to pay its debts, they wanted … the government to shut down. They’re extremists, and they’re running your show.” He added, “Do. The right. Thing! You know what the right thing to do is. You know we need to fix our border. You know that it has to be bipartisan.”
