Colorado Democrat Joe Neguse used the GOP lawmaker’s words against him. Mark Green, a Tenessee Republican, disagreed with his own op-ed because Neguse had set a trap.
The title
During a hearing regarding the GOP’s impeachment resolution against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Neguse read an excerpt from an article. The Colorado Democrat stated, “I’m going to enter it into the record. The title is, Americans are the victims of the impeachment inquiry.”
The subtitle
Neguse said, “The subtitle…is, ‘A lot of bipartisan legislation that enjoys support sits gathering dust while Congress focuses on the impeachment inquiry. ‘ ” He asked, “I assume you disagree with this?” Green responded, “I do.”
“Interesting” response
Neguse revealed, “It’s interesting. These are your words. This is an editorial that you wrote five years ago during the debate about the impeachment of former President Trump.” The Colorado lawmaker referred to Green’s November 2019 op-ed for The Tennessean.
It was during Trump’s first impeachment
The vote for first Trump’s impeachment began on December 18, 2019. The articles of impeachment charged him with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, and the main focus was on using a federal position to withhold aid to Ukraine if the Ukrainian government did not start an investigation into the Bidens.
Democrats had more to say
Neguse continued, “It’s fascinating that you changed your tune.” It was time for Massachusetts Democrat James McGovern to step in and present Green an article from the New York Times titled “Key Republican tells donors he will pursue impeachment of Mayorkas.”
Inside the Times piece
In an excerpt from April 2023, the article said that Green told donors he would ” produce charges of high crimes and misdemeanors against the homeland security secretary.” The outlet claimed there was audio confirming the story, “He said the panel would deliver charges to the House Judiciary Committee, which handles impeachment proceedings, according to an audio recording of a House Freedom Caucus fund-raiser obtained by The New York Times.”
McGovern pressed
McGovern told Green, “I think they have you on audio.” Green said he was misquoted and added, “Well, maybe we can ask them to produce the audio.” The Democrat also had opinions on Marjorie Taylor Greene and the censure resolution aimed at Ilhan Omar.
“Clowns are running the circus”
McGovern continued, “The clowns are running the circus. We’re wasting time on Marjorie Taylor Greene because she wants to impeach someone. Don’t get me started on her absurd censure resolution of Congresswoman Omar that she introduced because she doesn’t know how to use Google Translate.”
McGovern blasted House GOP
During a debate regarding the border bill, McGovern stated that Greene is “in charge, and Speaker Johnson is terrified of her and her MAGA extremist friends.” Greene wrote the impeachment resolution accusing Mayorkas of failing to “prevent invasion” and the “willful admittance of border crossers.”
Greene, the leader?
“Is she now the majority leader? Marjorie Taylor Greene? Someone who probably speaks at white supremacist rallies, someone who promotes Holocaust deniers, someone who compares Joe Biden to Adolf Hitler, and who says COVID mask requirements are the same thing as Nazi gas chambers? Someone who says wildfires are caused by Jewish space lasers and that 9/11 was an inside job?” McGovern wondered and added, “That’s the person that you put in charge of this whole Republican agenda right now?”
Greene responded on X
The Georgia firebrand wrote on X, “Wow this is coming from the same guy who is well known to lay his suit jacket on the actual bathroom floor while spending a lot of time in the stall of the first floor bathroom of the Capitol..”
McGovern fired back
The Democrat responded on X, “No idea what you’re talking about…what are you doing in the men’s bathroom aren’t you late for a klan meeting?”
