Elise Stefanik, a far-right Republican lawmaker and House Republican Conference Chair, filed a complaint against New York Attorney General Letitia James over the fraud case against former president Trump.
“Biased investigation”

Stefanik alleged that James conducted a “biased investigation and prosecution” of former president Trump and added that James violated the rules of professional conduct by “attacking” him through “extrajudicial statements.”
Stefanik wants James suspended or disbarred

In a letter to the New York Committee on Professional Standards, obtained by NBC News, the New York representative wrote that James made “highly inappropriate and prejudicial comments on social media” and asked for the AG to be suspended or disbarred.
Investigating James

Stefanik, who is reportedly high on the list for Trump’s running mate, called the investigation into Trump “shameful” and asked the Attorney Grievance Committee to investigate James. Stefanik further alleged that James made “50 prejudicial comments on social media during just the first five weeks of the trial.”
Stefanik issued a statement

In a statement, the New York legislator said, “While all Americans possess the right to express their opinions on matters of public interest, attorneys — particularly state attorneys general — are held to a higher standard due to their unique role as officers of the court.”
Trump slammed the AG on numerous occasions

Just days ago, Trump posted on Truth Social, “This is the Lunatic AG that’s prosecuting me. Lawyers say there is No Way this should be allowed to happen. She is working closely with Crooked Joe Biden’s DOJ, in order to harm his Political Opponent. Election Interference!”
Accusations outside the courtroom

Speaking to reporters in January, Trump said James should be held “criminally liable” for investigating him and added, “She did this to Exxon, and it drove Exxon out of New York.” Trump continued, “Exxon paid billions of dollars in taxes. They’re now living in Texas. Exxon is very happy in Texas. Other companies, because of what’s happening here, are going to be moving out of New York also. This is an out-of-control attorney general.”
That’s not what happened

Exxon moved from Manhattan in the late 80s. James became attorney general in 2018 and was re-elected in 2022. So, the former president was off by three decades when he said that James did the same to Exxon. James was involved in a civil lawsuit against Exxon in 2019, a case she gained from her predecessor.
Stefanik’s statements are raising eyebrows

In February, Stefanik appeared on CNN to discuss the 2020 election and its aftermath. She told Kaitlan Collins what she would have done if she had been VP: “I would not have done what Mike Pence did. I don’t think that was the right approach. … There was unconstitutional overreach in states like Pennsylvania, and I think it’s very important that we continue to stand up for the Constitution and have legal and secure elections, which we did not have in 2020.”
“Completely incorrect”

Republican Representative Dan Crenshaw told Dana Bash that Stefanik’s claims about certifying the elections were “totally wrong.” He explained, “The Constitution gives you no power — you, being the vice president — gives you no power to decertify the election. It’s very clear.”
Collins asked Stefanik about the possibility of becoming Trump’s VP

Stefanik told Collins, “I’m happy to be one of the top surrogates for President Trump. I voted for him in 2016. I was proud to work with him on his impeachment defense team when the first witch hunt started against him.” She added, “I would [be] proud to serve in a Trump administration, but we have a lot to do. I have a lot of responsibility as the Republican conference chair.”
Stefanik was in hot waters over the retracted January 6 statement

In Stefanik’s 2021 press release, she criticized the “violence and destruction” and called for rioters to be prosecuted. When Liz Cheney posted that statement on X, it went viral but was soon removed. This year, Stefanik called the rioters “hostages.”
The first House Republican leader to endorse Trump

The New York lawmaker was the first GOP House leader who endorsed the former president’s bid for re-election. In fact, Stefanik, a staunch Trump loyalist, issued her support even before Trump officially launched his 2024 campaign in November 2022.
Trump is waiting for Engoron, then Bragg

Judge Engoron’s ruling in the fraud case brought by AG James has been postponed after it was brought to his attention that Trump’s witness lied under oath. The former president should be back in New York’s courtroom in March when Trump will face prosecutor Alvin Bragg, who charged him of falsifying business records tied to the former president’s role in a hush-money payment to an adult star, Stormy Daniels.
