Speaker Johnson suggests Biden’s not “allowed” to make border decisions by his own staff

House Speaker Mike Johnson said President Biden’s staff is not allowing him to do something regarding the borders while warning about “clear and present danger.”

In his interview with Fox Business, the House Speaker said the President is not in control of the situation. Johnson suggested, “I don’t think he’s allowed to do it. I’m not sure Joe Biden is actually making these decisions.” Johnson added, “I think it’s staff around him, and they’re pushing him to hold the — or to keep the border open.”

The Republican from Louisana, who became House Speaker after Kevin McCarthy’s ousting, continued, “He knows that he has the authority. We’ve documented it for him.” Johnson continued, “I’ve read to him the law myself — to the President. Read him the provisions of the law and said, ‘Mr. President, please take action.’”

House Speaker further noted, “Biden went in on the first day of office and began issuing executive orders to create this catastrophe. We say it’s ‘by design’ because there is no other explanation.” Johnson continued, “We documented 64 executive actions and agency actions that he and Mayorkas have taken to create this. They could unwind it today by the stroke of a pen.”

Jonhson urged the President to use executive action at the southern border, adding that he wanted the “Remain in Mexico” policy to be reinstated. During Face the Nation, Johnson said, “On his first day in office, President Biden came in and issued executive orders that began this chaos,” and added, “Remain in Mexico is one of them.”

Still, Johnson is against the bipartisan deal

Though he likely did not even see the alleged deal, Johnson dubbed it a “nonstarter,” explaining to ABC Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott, “From what we’ve seen, clearly, what’s been suggested in this bill is not enough to secure the border.”

The White House reacted

After Johnson said the bill would be “dead on arrival,” the White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters, “House Republicans, they have a choice to make. They have to choose whether they want to solve a problem, actually solve a problem like the Senate is trying to do in a bipartisan way. Or, get in the way and score political points.”

While on the House floor, Johnson slammed the bipartisan bill, saying, “Apparently, we’re concocting some sort of deal to allow the President to shut down the border after 5,000 people break the law. Why is it 5,000? If you add that up, that’d be a million more illegals in our country every year before we take remedial measures. This is madness.”

Johnson also said while on the House floor there was “clear and present danger” to the Americans due to the situation on the southern border, and called it a “catastrophe.” Johnson further shared, “From Texas to New York, waves of illegal immigrants are now overwhelming our communities.”

House Speaker also said, “Ninety-five percent of the drug overdoses in New Orleans are caused by fentanyl. In Louisiana just last week, a precious two-year-old child was found dead with fentanyl in her system.”

White House fired back

In a statement, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said, “Speaker Johnson claimed he believes action should be taken to secure the border. Yet it is House Republicans who are saying they will block a historic bipartisan border security deal supported by President Biden that will deliver much-needed law enforcement hiring and investments in cutting-edge technology to stop fentanyl trafficking.”

Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader, confirmed that the bill’s text will be released on February 4, and Johnson said on Fox, “The devil is in the details. We’ll check it out.”

House Speaker noted, “I’m not prejudging anything, but I’ve told them the necessary elements of H.R. 2 are what is required to get control of the border. I’ve been consistent, and that’s our standard. We’ll be looking for that.”
