David Jolly appeared on MSNBC, where he revealed that despite the failed Mayorkas impeachment and failure of the bill providing aid to Israel. Speaker Johnson gets to keep his job. And all thanks to the fact that “nobody else wants his job.”
Johnson downplayed the messy situation
The MSNBC host presented several clippings showing Johnson downplaying the “mess” in the House and stating, “I don’t think this is a reflection on the leader. It’s a reflection of the body itself and the place where we’ve come in this country. Look, the nation is divided.”
“Sometimes it’s messy”
Following the failure to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and to approve a bill providing aid to Israel, Johnson confessed, “We’re governing here. Sometimes it’s messy.” Then he went into details, “You’re seeing the messy sausage making, the process of democracy play out. And it’s not always clean, it’s not always pretty, but the job will be done at the end of the day.”
Former representative on Johnson’s remarks
Jolly, who served as representative for Florida’s 13th congressional district from 2014 to 2017, was asked if there was any truth to Johnson’s claims. The former representative and a lawyer said that it was a “representation of the partisanship with which the Republican majority has decided to behave.”
Responsibility to govern
Jolly reminded that though they can’t have the super conservative priorities, “you still have the responsibility to govern and keep the government open to address crises, both internationally, and on our border. And because of the inability of Republicans to govern, this is a reflection of where we are.”
Jolly on Johnson
The former GOP lawmaker, who exited the party in 2018, said about House Speaker, “Mike Johnson ran for speaker saying he would expect responsibility, so he doesn’t get to pass it off to the rest of his caucus.”
Saving grace
Jolly continued, “The only thing that’s saving Mike Johnson right now is nobody else wants his job. Because nobody, everybody knows that they couldn’t do it either.” Still, just days before this interview, Jolly shared that Johnson and the House GOP “will recover and ultimately have the votes to impeach Secretary Mayorkas, and that might be a fight that the Biden administration wants to continue because Biden has House Republicans on the ropes on immigration.”
“Humiliating” for Johnson and McConnell
The former Florida lawmaker explained the horrible week, “Look, this is a humiliating week not just for Speaker Mike Johnson but also for Mitch McConnell, someone who is so seasoned in Republican leadership you rarely see a strategic mistake the size of which Mitch McConnell has made, which is why Josh Hawley and Mike Lee and so forth are starting to question McConnell’s tenure in leadership.”
The question of foreign aid
When it comes to foreign aid, Jolly was not optimistic, “In the question of aid to Israel, to Ukraine, and frankly, keeping the government open, there are only four more weeks before the next government shutdown deadline.”
Jolly left GOP because he rejected Trump
In his 2018 op-ed, Jolly wrote, “You can’t be never-Trump and be a Republican.” In the piece published on NBC News, the former lawmaker wrote how he called out the former president over immigration and the chain of events that led to him separating from the party.
Jolly’s warning
Now an Independent, Jolly talked to MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace in November and suggested that Trump would use an “enemies list” to pursue revenge against his critics to “advance his personal autocratic interest as well as an ideology that is toxic.”
Trump’s second term
Jolly also told Wallace that in the potential second term, the 45th president would use his power to fulfill a “scorched-earth” and “white nationalist throwback agenda.” He also wondered if US politics has changed forever.
Johnson insists on Mayorkas’ impeachment
Talking to reporters, the House Speaker said, “Mayorkas needs to be held accountable, and the Biden administration needs to be held accountable, and we will pass the articles of impeachment,” adding, “We’ll do it on next round.” Meanwhile, the next government shutdown is looming, and Johnson will likely be forced to work with Democrats again.
