Speaker Johnson backs Boebert following the controversial district switch, but others are not thrilled

Lauren Boebert has the House Speaker’s support in the reelections following her stunt where she switched congressional districts, making Colorado’s 4th district one of the hottest spots for GOP nominees.

Despite her turbulent years, 2023 ended on a high note for the Republican firebrand, and things are looking up. House Speaker Mike Johnson announced he’s endorsing her reelection bid in Colorado’s 4th district after she backed away from the rase in the 3rd district.

Boebert is pleased

Boebert, who was caught vaping and inappropriately acting with her date during the Beetlejuice musical last fall, bragged on X, “I am very grateful to have the support of Speaker Mike Johnson! I look forward to working with him to get President Trump reelected and defend our majority.”

In her current Colorado’s 3rd district, Boebert won by less than 550 votes, making it the country’s closest race for the House. But her 2022 victory was not likely to repeat, with Democrat Adam Frisch outraising Boebert by millions. Frisch also had 65 percent of donations from small donors, while Boebert had 58 percent.

Speaking to Steve Bannon on his podcast, the Republican firebrand blamed Hollywood, “When you have Barbra Streisand coming in and donating to the Democrat. When you have Ryan Reynolds coming in and donating to the Democrat, it shows you that Hollywood is trying to buy their way into Congress.” Reynolds donated 1500 dollars to Frinch, while Streisand donated 1000.

Boebert, who also went through a divorce last year and became a grandma, stated, “I am not abandoning my district. I love Colorado’s third district and will continue to fight for each and every person who is in the district.” Boebert’s announcement was via video, where she said, in part, “This is the right decision for Colorado.”

Justin Schreiber, running in Colorado’s 4th district’s primaries with Boebert, said, “Lauren Boebert rubbed her district the wrong way, and she abandoned her constituents.” He declared his candidacy in November of 2022.

Colorado GOP chair also shared some thoughts

Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williamson was asked on CNN if the people of Colorado were okay with someone not from their district representing them. Williamson said, “From a party perspective, we certainly don’t think it was the best move. We felt that she was best suited for Congressional District 3.”

Accusations of “seat shopping”

State Representative Richard Holtorf, a Republican, said, “Seat shopping isn’t something voters look kindly on.” He added, “Does she think we’re that stupid? Does she think we’re going to be fooled by this trickery?”

Former state Senator Ted Harvey, who is also in the run to take over Ken Buck’s seat in Colorado’s 4th district, noted, “It’s sad, first and foremost, because she ran to say that she wasn’t going to be a career politician.” He added, “She’s decided to cling to power and continue to be a career politician.”

“Savvy and desperate”

Sandra Hagen Solin, a Republican strategist, called Beobert’s move both “savvy and desperate” and added, “Her desire to maintain some semblance of power and enjoyment of a prominent media profile motivated her to seek an alternative path in the face of a very likely defeat in CD3.”

This is “unprecedented”

Though Boebert was not the first politician to switch districts, it is not a common practice. CBS News Colorado political analyst Dick Wadhams called the move “unprecedented,” adding, “She knew she was probably going to lose in the 3rd Congressional District.”

House Minority Leader Mike Lynch jumped into the race for Colorado’s 4th district, the most Republican congressional district in the state. Apart from Lynch and Boebert, the list of Republicans ready to replace Buck includes ex-state senator Jerry Sonnenberg, State Representative Richard Holtorf, Conservative talk radio host Deborah Flora, and Former state Senator Ted Harvey.
