Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton endorsed Trump and stated the US was “safe” during his presidency, something that many disagreed with.
Cotton among 18 Senators who endorsed Trump
Arkansas Republican is among 18 Senators who support Trump as the GOP’s presidential nominee in the 2024 elections. Cotton, who was reportedly also considering running for the Republican nomination, said, “When Donald Trump was President, America was safe, strong, and prosperous. The economy was booming, working-class wages were growing, our border was secure, and our enemies feared us.”
Going after the President
Cotton’s statement continued on X, “With Joe Biden as president, everything has gone to hell: families can’t afford groceries, our border is wide open to a full-blown invasion, and our enemies are starting wars everywhere.”
Cotton believes Republicans will take over the Senate
In October, Senator Cotton said, “We have multiple great candidates, who I think will produce great nominees for the primary and that we will win back the United States Senate next year.” The Democrats took over the Senate in 2021, and Cottom is open to working with Trump to bring it back to the Republicans.
Problems with Cotton’s statement
MSNBC columnist Michael A. Cohen commented on Cotton’s Trump endorsement in his op-ed titled, “Tom Cotton says Trump kept America ‘safe.’ Covid would like a word.” The columnist pointed out that the Senator forgot about Covid and wrote, “In 2020, the US economy contracted by 3.5 percent, the largest decline since after World War II.”
How Trump handled Covid
Cohen alleged that Trump “ignored the warning signs of a possible pandemic, even forbidding members of his administration from talking about it publicly.” The columnist also accused the 45th president of knowing that Covid was “deadly,” but he resisted taking measures “until it was too late.”
More accusations against Trump
Cohen also reminded people how Trump “endorsed the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a Covid cure, which, according to a study out this week, may have caused the deaths of 17,000 people worldwide.” The columnist also wrote about strange ideas, like putting bright lights into the human body to eliminate the virus.
Devastating findings
The author cited the Lancet Commission that said 40 percent of the US deaths were preventable, adding that the US had the largest number of Covid deaths in the world. Yet, Trump held rallies “estimated to have led to more than 30,000 Covid cases.”
Cohen also discussed other GOP nominees
DeSantis’ “indifference” was also questioned by the columnist, as were his attacks on doctor Fauci. Yet, Cohen reminded readers how Biden’s campaign did not mention the historical vaccine rollout despite “Trump’s mishandling of Covid” being one of “the greatest fiasco(s) of his presidency..”
People are not talking about the pandemic enough
The author noted, “Much of the discussion about a second Trump presidency is focused on what he might do to undermine American democracy.” He acknowledged the importance, but the author still thinks people should consider how Trump “handled the most significant crisis of his time in office.”
Cotton on the elections
Talking to Politico, the Senator said that we have “highly consequential” elections. He spoke about the President’s foreign policies, saying, “Joe Biden’s obviously lost a step. But I think his conduct in American foreign policy over the last 18 months or so has been consistent with his kind of wild swings.”
Hutchinson on Cotton
Asa Hutchinson, former Governor of Arkansas, said he wasn’t surprised by Cotton’s endorsement of Trump. “Tom has been a long-time ally of Donald Trump, so I understand his endorsement,” Hutchinson told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
Cotton repeated endorsement on Fox News
“I endorse President Trump, and I look forward to working with him to win back the White House and the Senate so we can help hardworking Arkansans suffering from Joe Biden’s disastrous policies,” Senator Cotton said while on Fox News.
More support from Arkansas
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders endorsed Trump in November, saying, “It’s not a question between right versus left anymore. It’s normal versus crazy, and President Biden and the left are doubling down on crazy.”
Still, Hutchinson believes it is time to go back to “normal”
The Republican who is running against Trump said in a press release, “Iowans have described me as ‘normal’ in contrast to the crazy rhetoric, conspiracy theories, and false promises of some candidates and leaders. Normal is another way of saying we have to return to the basic conservative principles that have guided the Republican party and our country.”
The former Governor on border crisis
Hutchison also shared, “I understand the border, and even though it is a disaster under President Biden, it was a mess also under President Trump. I know what needs to be done, and I have the ability to work with Congress to provide the resources and changes needed to protect our citizens.” The ex-governor was in the George W. Bush administration and was assisting lead the Department of Homeland Security’s border security.
