This follows the endorsement by former President Donald Trump of a new leadership team for the party, including Michael Whatley as the next R.N.C chairman, Lara Trump as co-chair, and Chris LaCivita as chief operating officer.

McDaniel’s decision comes on the heels of the South Carolina primary and less than two weeks after Trump’s endorsement.

McDaniel, who broke ground as the first woman to chair the R.N.C. in over four decades, expressed gratitude to Trump and fellow Republicans for their support.

She proudly called her tenure’s achievements ‘the honor of a lifetime.’

Key Achievements

She highlighted her key achievements, including “firing Nancy Pelosi, winning the popular vote in 2022, creating an Election Integrity Department, building the committee’s first small dollar grassroots donor program, strengthening our state parties through our Growing Republican Organizations to Win program, expanding the Party through minority outreach at our community centers, and launching Bank Your Vote to get Republicans to commit to voting early.”

A Strategic Move?

McDaniel announced her plan to step down on March 8 at the Spring Training in Houston, stating, “I have decided to step aside…to allow our nominee to select a Chair of their choosing. The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition.”

“I remain committed to winning back the White House and electing Republicans up and down the ballot in November,” she added.

Previously leading Michigan’s Republican Party, she ascended to the national committee leadership in 2017, following Trump’s victory in Michigan during the 2016 election.

Focus on Election Integrity

McDaniel recounted her focus on early voting and the creation of an election integrity unit after the 2020 election. This unit, important to Trump and his team for the 2024 election, comes despite no proven widespread fraud in 2020 and numerous legal setbacks for Trump’s allies.

RNC’s Financial Landscape

Trump has been adamant about the R.N.C. enhancing its focus on election integrity. Additionally, financial concerns within the R.N.C. have been a point of discussion among Trump and his advisers, acknowledging Trump’s part in these challenges.

The R.N.C.’s January fundraising totaled $12 million, while Trump’s campaign raised just under $9 million.

Avoiding Legal Pitfalls

McDaniel’s allies highlight a crucial aspect of her leadership: the R.N.C. has avoided criminal charges or extensive legal issues, unlike Trump and his supporters who faced legal challenges post-2020 election loss to Biden.

Although Trump’s lawyers, Giuliani and Powell, used R.N.C. headquarters for a press conference making unfounded claims about voting systems in late November 2020, R.N.C. officials did not partake in this event or most of Giuliani’s legal campaigns.

Rare Step Down

McDaniel, who Trump recently called a ‘friend’ on social media following a meeting, has been largely unscathed by public criticism from Trump. Her re-election to a new term last year was overwhelming, marking a rare instance of a party chair stepping down during an election year.

Struggle Within the GOP

McDaniel faced intense pressure from Trump’s right-wing media allies to leave her post, blaming her for the GOP’s 2022 performance, not Trump or his endorsed candidates. Trump pressured her to cancel primary debates and, at times, primaries themselves, which she resisted.

GOP Leaders Applaud Her Role

Despite criticism from Trump’s circle, she received praise from GOP officials like Senators Steve Daines and Representative Richard Hudson. Kevin McCarthy commended her as a ‘strong leader’ instrumental in regaining the House majority.

Expanding the Electoral Map

“Her leadership in the party helped expand the electoral map and supported candidates that are now rising stars,” McCarthy added.
