Nikki Haley blasted Trump’s endorsements for the RNC (Republican National Committee) and suggested the former President was trying to influence the elections during her South Carolina rally.
Trump backed Michael Whatley and his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump
The former President endorsed Michael Whatley, the chair of the North Carolina GOP, to succeed Ronna McDaniel as chair of the RNC. According to Trump, Lara Trump, Eric Trump’s wife, would be his co-chair.
Haley is not buying it
During a rally in her hometown Bamberg, South Carolina, the former UN ambassador wondered, “Think about what’s happening right now,” asking, “Is that how you’re going to try and take an election?” Haley doubled down on her claims while on Fox News.
The big question
During her interview with Fox News, Haley said, “Go, and you look at what he did with the RNC yesterday … he’s going and changing out leadership so that it’s somebody that he prefers and his daughter-in-law to co-chair?”
“We don’t have kings”
The former Governor of South Carolina continued, “He’s putting his campaign manager as the director? Are we going to let him just take over the party that’s going to control the convention, too? At what point do we not see the problem? We don’t have kings in this country.”
Trump campaign spokesperson slammed Haley
Trump campaign spokesperson Steve Cheung said in a statement to NBC News, “Nikki ‘Braindead Birdbrain’ Haley reeks of desperation as it’s clear she knows she has no shot, and is now auditioning for a cable news contract when her 15 minutes are over.” He added, “But not before she can squeeze every last dollar out of her Democrat benefactors.”
Democrats backing Haley
HuffPost spoke to South Carolina organizers for Primary Pivot, a national super PAC. They aim to convince voters to vote for Haley in the open primaries because she “respects our Constitution and respects our democracy.” Most Democrats would rather have a Biden-Haley match in November despite her numbers showing she could beat the President.
Trump gave a statement regarding the RNC
The statement read, “The RNC MUST be a good partner in the Presidential election. It must do the work we expect from the national Party and do it flawlessly.” Trump added that the elections must be “fair and transparent” and referred to himself “as the Republican presumptive nominee for President.”
Who is the possible RNC Chair?
Trump said, “Michael has been with me from the beginning, has done a great job in his home state of North Carolina, and is committed to election integrity, which we must have to keep fraud out of our election so it can’t be stolen.” However, many took notice that Whitley was an election denier.
Democratic party responded
The Democratic National Committee commented on Trump’s endorsements, “With his endorsement of election-denying conspiracy theorist Michael Whatley for chair of the RNC, Trump is making it clear that the GOP is the home for insurrectionists and extreme MAGA fanatics.”
What about Ronna McDaniel?
There was no official announcement that Ronna McDaniel was planning to step down. However, RNC spokesperson Keith Schipper said in a statement, “There will be no decision or announcement about future plans until after South Carolina.” According to reports, Trump met with McDaniel in his Mar-a-Lago residence days before he made his endorsements.
Trump chose McDaniel
McDaniel, Mitt Romney’s niece, was chosen by Trump to lead the RNC after his 2016 election victory. The two enjoyed a great relationship, but things seemingly changed after her testimony in front of the January 6 select committee. CNN reported that Trump resented the RNC’s actions following the 2020 election.
“Chaos follows him”
While in Newberry, South Carolina, Haley blasted Trump over GOP losses. She said, “The reality is chaos follows him,” adding, “We can’t be a country in disarray and a world on fire and go through four more years of chaos. We won’t survive it.”
