Tony Bobulinski, hailed as a “deadly witness” by conservatives, faces scrutiny over his past actions and connections to Trump’s circle.
Conservative Praise
This month, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer spoke on Lindell TV’s Lou Dobbs Tonight, highlighting Bobulinski as a former Hunter Biden associate who is “the one solid guy that tried to do the right thing and was honest.”
An ‘Honest Guy’?
Comer continued his praise last Friday on Newsmax, referring to Bobulinski as the sole “honest guy that appears to have been temporarily in the Biden orbit.”
Nonetheless, Bobulinski’s recent testimony on Capitol Hill for the impeachment inquiry reveals a less-than-perfect image.
The Dual Faces of Bobulinski
His overt ties to Donald Trump and personal controversial transactions, as court records obtained by The New Republic suggest, might undermine the reliability of his closed-door testimony.
Allegations of Profit
The emerging impeachment investigation revolves around allegations that Joe Biden profited from his vice-presidential role under Barack Obama, leveraging Hunter Biden’s business dealings in China and Ukraine.
These claims, strongly denied by the president and numerous Republican witnesses, form the backdrop of the inquiry.
Bobulinski as a ‘Deadly Witness’
Leading up to his Tuesday testimony, figures like Tucker Carlson and the New York Post portrayed Tony Bobulinski, a former business associate of Hunter Biden, as a “deadly witness” and a wealthy individual not seeking fame or fortune.
Reliability Questioned
Bobulinski’s own financial dealings, particularly those just before his allegations of Biden’s involvement in his son’s international ventures, bring his reliability into question.
They paint a picture of a man pursuing various monetary claims against former business partners through legal means.
Bobulinski vs. China Branding Group
Tony Bobulinski faced legal challenges when China Branding Group sued him in July 2020. Bobulinski, asserting his right to 2.5 times his investment in the company between 2015 and 2016, claimed $1,765,000 during its 2017 liquidation.
However, Cayman Islands liquidators only recognized his right to the original $650,000 investment.
Paying the Price
In 2021, the U.S. District Court in Central California sided with China Branding Group, confirming the Cayman Islands’ decision and ordering Bobulinski to pay over $662,000 plus legal fees.
Failed Appeal
Bobulinski’s appeal was unsuccessful, as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in the company’s favor in January, reducing his payment to over $494,000 plus lawsuit costs.
Coal-Mining Dispute
In 2022, Tony Bobulinski, through Global Investment Ventures, sued Kingdom Logistics’ owner for $1 million, alleging unpaid triple investment returns from a coal-mining operation in Kentucky.
Alleged fraudulent behavior
Bobulinski accused the owner, Robert Stout, of fraudulent behavior, but Stout countered with accusations of unclean hands and fraud by Bobulinski.
The case heads to trial in August.
More Lawsuits
In a separate 2021 incident, YDS Investment Company sued Bobulinski for failing to repay $1.2 million, resulting in a lawsuit for over $457,000 in damages.
However, the case was dismissed with prejudice, suggesting a confidential settlement.
Trump’s Team Efforts
Tony Bobulinski’s allegations of Joe Biden’s involvement in a Chinese oil venture, made days before the 2020 presidential election, were part of Team Trump’s efforts, as noted by The New York Times.
Lack of Facts
Despite assistance from Trump’s associates, The Wall Street Journal dismissed the story for lack of facts.
Sharing with the Public
Bobulinski publicly aired these claims at a Trump-organized press conference, but the Journal later reported no evidence of Joe Biden’s involvement, and Bobulinski only shared selected documents with the FBI.
Hiding Under a Ski Mask
Post-meeting, Bobulinski and Passantino returned to Trump International Hotel, per an FBI memo released by the House Ways and Means Committee.
Bobulinski later met Mark Meadows in Georgia, wearing a ski mask for anonymity, as detailed in Cassidy Hutchinson’s book.
Son Defends Father
Hunter Biden, condemning the Republican investigation as baseless, insisted on a public hearing instead of a closed-door session, affirming his father’s lack of financial involvement in his business and accusing Republicans of using him for political gain.
“Let me state as clearly as I can: My father was not financially involved in my business,” the President’s son asserted.
