After the highly anticipated bipartisan border deal was revealed, conservatives reacted to the part that would reportedly strip Texas of its border security powers. Even before its official release, Governor Abbott announced that the Texas National Guard would continue to expand security efforts.
What’s in the bill
The bipartisan bill gives power to the President to shut down the border with Mexico if more than 4,000 migrants attempt to cross the border in a week. It would provide $20bn for border security, an additional $60bn for Ukraine, and direct $14.1bn to Israel and Taiwan.
Johnson said it was “worse than expected”
Speaker Johnson wrote on X, “I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created.”
The House Speaker repeated the previous statement
Johnson added, “As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, ‘the border never closes.'” He continued, “If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival,” which he previously stated despite not officially seeing it.
Sole jurisdiction
Kurt Schlichter, a columnist, and a lawyer, posted what’s inside the bill regarding Texas, “The United States District Court for the District of Columbia shall have sole and original jurisdiction to hear challenges, whether constitutional or otherwise, to the validity of this section or any written policy directive, written policy guideline, written procedure, or the implementation thereof.”
Schlichter reacted
The columnist wrote, “Well, the immigration bill is out, and it’s even crappier than I imagined. What a freaking disaster. Just when you think they can’t suck anymore, they suck even more.”
The question of Texas
Former federal prosecutor Bill Shipley replied to Schlichter’s post on X, writing, “This would prevent plaintiffs – like the State of Texas – from filing suit in Texas federal courts. This is corrupt.”
“Far left DC district court” to be in charge
Mike Howell shared several posts about the bill, including, “This bill is insane. Does anyone think asylum officers need a pay raise?” In another, the conservative author noted that the bill “puts far left DC district court in charge.”
Abbott did not mention the deal
Texas Governor held a press conference before the deal was presented and stated, “Joe Biden, it is your turn now — your obligation, your duty, to follow the laws Congress passed and secure the border, just as Texas has.” Abbott was joined by several other GOP Governors, including Tennessee, Montana, Arkansas, and Georgia governors.
Arkansas Governor also spoke up
Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Governor of Arkansas, said that because of Biden’s failures, “Governor Abbott is having to step up, governors from across the country are having to step up and do the job of the federal government because they simply won’t.”
Border “invasion”
Democratic lawmaker Joaquin Castro slammed Abbott during the press conference: “Governor Abbott understands by now that when he calls this an invasion, he’s putting a target on people’s backs.” Castro and other Democratic lawmakers in Texas accused Abbott of inciting violence by talking about the “invasion” and allowing right-wing convoys to visit the US-Mexico border.
Other Republicans blasted the bill
Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote on X, “The Senate border surrender deal is DOA in the House. We are going to impeach Mayorkas this week not empower him with a legalized invasion of 1.8 million per year with amnesty while funding the defense of other country’s borders.”
Boebert joined
Lauren Boebert also criticized the bill, writing, “This so-called border ‘compromise’ bill reads like a compromise between the cartels, the human traffickers and Alejandro Mayorkas. They are all salivating reading this thing. No Republican should support this absolute amnesty monstrosity that fails to actually secure the border.”
Trump’s warning
Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Don’t be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration Bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape, or form!” He continued, “This Bill is a great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party. It takes the HORRIBLE JOB the Democrats have done on Immigration and the Border, absolves them, and puts it all squarely on the shoulders of Republicans.”
