Liz Cheney Calls Out GOP Senator’s Push to Overturn Elections and Defy Supreme Court Rulings as ‘Tyranny’

Liz Cheney, a former Republican representative who has emerged as a critic of Donald Trump, described Sen. J.D. Vance’s stance on presidential compliance with Supreme Court decisions as a ‘tyranny.’

Tyrannical Views?

“Yesterday, @JDVance1 claimed that Trump could defy rulings of the Supreme Court as President. Vance also admitted he would have done what VP Pence refused to do on January 6th—help Trump illegally seize power.” Cheney wrote Monday on X, formerly Twitter.

“That’s tyranny,” she remarked.

Her comment was in response to Vance’s appearance on ABC News, where he suggested to George Stephanopoulos that a president might legally resist Supreme Court judgments.

Challenging Supreme Court’s Role

“If the Supreme Court said that the president of the United States can’t fire a general,” Vance stated, “that would be an illegitimate ruling, and the president has to have Article 2 prerogative under the Constitution to actually run the military as he sees fit.”

Vance also mentioned that if he had been vice president on January 6, 2021, he wouldn’t have affirmed President Joe Biden’s election, which was the day rioters invaded the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop Mike Pence from doing so.

The Cincinnati Republican, who is being considered for Trump’s vice-presidential pick if Trump secures the GOP nomination, stated, “If I had been Vice President, I would have told the states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and so many others that we needed to have multiple slates of electors and I think the U.S. Congress should have fought over it from there.”

“That is the legitimate way to deal with an election that a lot of folks, including me, think had a lot of problems in 2020. I think that’s what we should have done.”

Election Conspiracy Theories

Post-2020 election, Trump falsely claimed it was ‘stolen’ after losing to Joe Biden. In an attempt to remain in office, he pressured Pence to dismiss electors from certain states during the January 6, 2021 Congressional electoral vote count.

Trump incited his supporters to march on the U.S. Capitol, leading to a riot and chants of ‘Hang Mike Pence.’ Supporters of the former president in states Biden won formed alternate elector groups, hoping they would replace Biden’s electors, a move leading to criminal charges in several states.

Addressing Election Concerns

When Stephanopoulos pointed out that Vance’s stance mirrored Trump’s request rather than Pence’s refusal, Vance argued it was more about addressing issues like those in 2020.

Neither Trump Nor Vance Fit?

Cheney criticized Vance on X, stating, “Vance also admitted he would have done what VP Pence refused to do on January 6th—help Trump illegally seize power.”

“Neither Trump nor Vance is fit to serve.”

Vance’s contentious Supreme Court remark led Stephanopoulos to abruptly end the interview, pointedly telling the Republican, “You’ve made it very clear, you think the president can defy the Supreme Court/”

Stephanopoulos, who graduated from Northeast Ohio’s Orange High School, also questioned Vance about his prior negative comments about Trump, made before his successful U.S. Senate campaign, which Trump endorsed.

Vance had claimed that Trump was taking political discourse to a ‘very negative place,’ labeled him as ‘fundamentally divisive’ and ‘arrogant,’ and even declared himself a ‘Never Trump guy.’

Trump Proved Him Wrong

Responding to this, Vance said, “I think, in office actually George, he did a great job and he proved me wrong. He also proved a lot of other people wrong, which is why I think he’s doing so well in the polls these days.”

Vance is among the Republicans competing to be Trump’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 election.
