More Democrats are flipping in a crucial swing state than Republicans

Pennsylvania is sending an unflattering signal to President Biden’s administration, according to the latest data from the Department of State. It shows that a massive number of registered Democrats flipped, over two times higher than Republican voters.

The Pennsylvania Department of State registration data says 35,589 registered Democrats switched their party affiliation to Republican. In contrast, 15,622 registered Republicans flipped to the Democratic party. Additionally, 20,908 former Democrats and 18,927 former Republicans are not affiliated with any party, the data from December 18 concluded.

Erik Telford, a senior vice president of public affairs at the Commonwealth Foundation, explained to Newsweek that current trends should raise alarms in Washington due to “voters who overwhelmingly feel that things are headed in the wrong direction.”

The state lost 19,967 Democrats, while Biden won the state by around 80,000 votes in the 2020 elections. Additionally, in 2023, Biden’s disapproval rating reached an all-time high in Pennsylvania with a staggering 61 percent.

More data that should bother Biden

The Commonwealth Foundation’s December survey found that approximately a third of registered voters would still vote for Biden in the 2024 elections. However, 46 percent would not support the President in general elections, including 15 percent of Democrats. Also, 10 percent of Pennsylvania Democrats would vote for Trump if the two meet in the general elections, while 30 percent are undecided.

The state carries 20 Electoral College votes, placing its relevance fifth of all states. Newsweek pointed out that only two presidential candidates won the elections without Pennsylvania votes between 1932 and 1988. Even more challenging for Democrats is that they haven’t been able to win the elections without this state since 1948.

Biden spent more time in Pennsylvania than any other swing state during the 2020 campaign, and Trump won the 2016 election by winning and ending the blue streak that lasted for 24 years. The loss of Pennsylvania voters could easily result in the loss of presidential elections.

Asking questions

Political consultant Jay Townsend told Newsweek that Biden’s campaign should be asking many questions, adding that while Biden does not have to win all swing states, he can’t afford to lose Pennsylvania.

DNC spokesperson spoke about the trend of more democrats turning their affiliation to the Republican party, telling Newsweek, “The Pennsylvania Democratic Party has had a sweeping victory for Democrats in the 2023 election cycle.” The spokesperson cited the state’s victories, adding that “the PA Dems have invested significantly in the party structure, providing unprecedented resources at every level.”

Some reasonably good news for Democrats

Daniel Hopkins, a politics professor at the University of Pennsylvania specializing in state politics, told Newsweek that despite many Democrats leaving the party, she believes many did not vote in the previous elections. Hopkins added that we might see this trend in “Republican registrations accelerate this year if the GOP presidential primary is contested while the Democratic primary is less so.”

But not everyone is as optimistic

Still, Telford is not as optimistic, and rejecting the data could cause Biden’s “own peril and have a significant impact on down-ballot races.”

In 2022, Democrats took over the state House of Representatives for the first time since 2010. Despite its slim majority, the party scored other significant wins under the Biden administration. Democrats returned to holding a 5-2 majority in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after Democratic Superior Court Judge Daniel McCaffery defeated Republican Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Carolyn Carluccio.
