Republican Appointed Federal judge voiced a stern rebuke on Thursday against leading figures in the Republican Party for their attempts to cast the January 6 Capitol riot in a favorable light.
Shameless Actions
The judge at a resentencing hearing conveyed deep disappointment in the portrayal of the January 6 Capitol assailants as innocents and the labeling of convicted individuals as political prisoners or hostages, describing these actions as “shameless.”
Future Dangers
Senior U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, appointed in 1987 by then-President Ronald Reagan, remarked that the manner in which Republican leaders are characterizing the rioters is “preposterous” and warned that such misleading narratives could potentially foreshadow future dangers for the country.
“Meritless Justifications”
Lamberth of the Federal District Court in Washington wrote in a seven-page filing, “In my 37 years on the bench, I cannot recall a time when such meritless justifications of criminal activity have gone mainstream.”
Dismay Over Falsehoods
He added, “I have been dismayed to see distortions and outright falsehoods seep into the public consciousness.”
Conspiracy Theory Concerns
Lamberth condemned the extensive network of conspiracy theories and untruths regarding the Capitol attack, which have widely infiltrated right-wing discourse.
Lack of Remorse
During the hearing, he criticized the rioter, James Little, noting his apparent lack of remorse. Lamberth emphasized the need to correct the widespread misinformation, drawing from his extensive experience overseeing numerous January 6 cases.
Rewriting History
The judge said, “I have been shocked to watch some public figures try to rewrite history, claiming rioters behaved ‘in an orderly fashion’ like ordinary tourists, or martyrizing convicted January 6 defendants as ‘political prisoners’ or even, incredibly, ‘hostages.'”
Potential Danger
“That is all preposterous. But the court fears that such destructive, misguided rhetoric could presage further danger to our country,” remarked Lamberth
Rioters as Hostages
The judge did not explicitly name the public figures he accused of disseminating false information. However, former President Donald J. Trump and Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, have referred to those prosecuted for their involvement in the Capitol breach and for assaulting police officers as “hostages.”
Attempt to Block Biden’s Win
This group sought to prevent Congress from confirming President Joe Biden’s Electoral College win.
“Treated as Political Prisoners”
In March, Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene toured a D.C. jail where January 6 defendants were being held and asserted that they were being “treated as political prisoners” due to their beliefs.
January 6 Narrative
These remarks exemplify the broader campaign led by many Trump-supporting Republicans and conservative figures to reinterpret the events of the January 6 riot as a patriotic demonstration by peaceful protesters who are currently facing persecution. Recent polls indicate that an increasing number of Republican voters are subscribing to this narrative.
Threat to Democracy
Judge Lamberth countered these narratives by asserting the rioters’ actions were a direct threat to the constitutional process and American democracy.
Opposite of Patriotism.
He emphasized that the riot resulted in deaths, injuries to law enforcement, and national trauma, describing these actions as the complete opposite of patriotism.
Rights and Responsibilities
Judge Lamberth also addressed the misinterpretation of free speech rights, clarifying that while individuals are free to believe in election fraud, this does not justify illegal actions such as entering restricted areas or rioting in the Capitol.
Right & Wrong
He stressed the importance of distinguishing between right and wrong, pointing out defendant Little’s inability to acknowledge his wrongdoing.
“Truth will Go a Long Way”
Lamberth noted, “Mr. Little’s actions, and the actions of others who broke the law on January 6, were wrong. The court does not expect its remarks to fully stem the tide of falsehoods. But I hope a little truth will go a long way.”
DOJ Charges 1,250
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has brought charges against over 1,250 individuals in relation to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Guilty Plea
DOJ reports that over 700 defendants have voluntarily pleaded guilty, affirming before judges, under the threat of perjury, their involvement in criminal activities on January 6.
