Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer discussed the 2024 race on CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she explained to Democratic voters that not voting for Biden supports Trump’s return to the White House.
The Division Inside the Democratic Party
The host, Dana Bash, pointed out that there are “Democratic divisions” regarding many issues, but the most significant in Michigan seems to be over the war in Gaza. Ahead of the primaries, set for February 27, Bash told Whitmer, “Some of the leaders, very vocal, respected leaders inside your state, Rashida Tlaib is one of them, they’re pushing Democrats to vote uncommitted on Tuesday, instead of voting for President Biden, in order to send a message and to protest what the president is doing. This is a real serious campaign by people like Rashida Tlaib and others.” She asked, “How worried are you?”
Whitmer is Unsure
The Governor responded, “Well, I’m not sure what we’re going to see on Tuesday, to tell you the truth. I can tell you this, Michigan has been so fortunate to be the home of a robust Arab, Muslim, Palestinian community and a robust Jewish community. We have lived in harmony as neighbors for decades. And there’s a lot of pain all across all of these communities because of what’s happening halfway around the world.”
What Truly Matters
The second-term Democratic Governor reminded voters, “It’s important not to lose sight of the fact that any vote that’s not cast for Joe Biden supports a second Trump term. A second Trump term would be devastating, not just on fundamental rights, not just on our democracy here at home, but also when it comes to foreign policy.” The Governor added, “This was a man who promoted a Muslim ban. This is, I think, a very high-stakes moment.”
Building Bridges
“I am encouraging people to cast an affirmative vote for President Biden. I understand the pain that people are feeling. And I will continue to work to build bridges with folks in all of these communities because they’re all important to me, they’re all important to Michigan, and I know they’re all important to President Biden as well,” the Governor concluded.
Tlaib’s Message
The Palestinian-American representative from Michigan shared a video where she declared, “Don’t make us even more invisible. Right now, we feel completely neglected and just unseen by our government.”
Tlaib is the First Palestinian-American Congresswoman
In the video shared days before the state’s primaries, Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, added, “If you want us to be louder, then come here and vote uncommitted.”
“Enough is Enough”
Tlaib continued, “It is important, as you all know, to not only march against the genocide, not only make sure that we’re calling on members of Congress and local electeds and passing city resolutions all throughout our country. It is also important to create a voting bloc. Something that is a bullhorn to say: enough is enough.”
Michigan Has More Arabs Than Any Other State
The Great Lake State has the largest Arab population of any state in the country, approximately 2.1% of its demographics. Due to the division inside the Democratic party, Michigan is considered a battleground for the 2024 election. But, there is a growing number of voters across the country who are not satisfied with the relationship with Israel at the moment.
The Biden Administration’s Response
Jon Finer, a deputy national security adviser, said, according to the New York Times, that the administration made missteps following the October 7 attack, adding, “We have left a very damaging impression based on what has been a wholly inadequate public accounting for how much the president, the administration and the country values the lives of Palestinians. And that began, frankly, pretty early in the conflict.”
Whitmer Discussed the IVF Situation
Michigan Governor told Bash, “We have always known that, with the appointments that Donald Trump made to the United States Supreme Court, that IVF, that a woman’s ability to make her own decisions about her body and all the panoply of things that come from that were in jeopardy.”
Winning Platform
The reproductive rights platform was one of the reasons Whitmer won re-election in 2022. The Governor is also one of the biggest Democratic stars on the rise, with some saying she could be running for the presidential election in 2028. However, she is now dedicated to Biden’s re-election.
Improving Education
The Governor recently presented a budget plan to improve state education. She told lawmakers, “My budget today will deliver on the vision I outlined a couple of weeks ago,” adding, “Lowering costs, improving education, and ensuring that anyone and everyone can make it here in Michigan.”
