An enormous convoy of truckers is set to journey through three states to key migrant hotspots, aiming to spotlight the escalating crisis and prompt White House action.
Truckers Rally at Border’s Edge
In an impressive display, hundreds, perhaps thousands, of large trucks will converge on Eagle Pass, Texas, Yuma, Arizona, and San Ysidro, California starting January 29 for the ‘Take Back Our Border’ event, spanning four days.
‘The time is NOW’
Their aim is to cast a spotlight on the record influx of migrants crossing the southern border, causing strain on many cities struggling to provide adequate care. Texas Congressman Keith Self, a Republican, declared, “Once again, the truckers are standing for We the People”
“The time is NOW to take action and secure our borders!”
Escalating Texas-Border Tension
This move marks a new phase in the heated political battle, with Texas challenging federal authority. Governor Greg Abbott has accused the Biden Administration of failing to adequately manage the influx of illegal immigrants into Texas.
Supreme Court Sides with Biden
Despite a Supreme Court decision favoring the Biden Administration’s right to remove Texas-installed razor wire at the border, Texas is escalating its efforts by adding additional wire and refusing to relinquish control of a park in Eagle Pass taken over on January 10.
Interestingly, a golf course in the park remains operational for local enjoyment.
Critical Decision
The Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision is a significant victory for President Joe Biden in the escalating border policy dispute with Governor Abbott. This decision comes at a critical time, following the drowning of three migrants in a section of the Rio Grande, where state officials had restricted agent access.
This incident intensified the administration’s call for the Supreme Court’s intervention.
Federal Appeals on Border Wire
Last month, a federal appeals court halted the removal of razor wire by Border Patrol agents along a portion of the Rio Grande pending ongoing legal proceedings. The Justice Department’s emergency request to overturn this decision was then granted by the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh opposed this federal appeal.
White House Praises Court
White House spokesman Angelo Fernández Hernández expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s action, highlighting its importance in allowing frontline personnel to perform “vital federal functions and interfered with their ability to address urgent humanitarian situations and enforce our laws.”
CNN Supreme Court analyst Steve Vladeck emphasized that while the order benefits the Biden administration, it also raises concerns about future delays.
Abbott Vows to Fight
Andrew Mahaleris, speaking for Governor Abbott, argued that the lack of razor wire and similar deterrents encourages risky and unlawful crossings. He affirmed that the governor “will continue fighting to defend Texas’ property and its constitutional authority to secure the border.”
The Department of Homeland Security also welcomed the high court’s decision, as stated by their spokesperson.
The Countdown Begins
The federal government has set a January 26 deadline for Texas to grant Border Patrol agents access to Shelby Park, from which they have been barred. The consequences of Texas’ non-compliance by this Friday remain unclear.
Using Force
San Antonio Congressman Joaquin Castro escalated the situation, suggesting that President Biden might need to resort to using force. Castro’s statement on social media highlighted Governor Greg Abbott’s use of the Texas National Guard to disrupt border operations.
Federal Intervention?
Castro suggested, “If Abbott is defying yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, @POTUS needs to establish sole federal control of the Texas National Guard now.”
25 Governors Support Abbott
Abbott’s stance has significant backing, with 25 Republican state governors endorsing his actions. Congressman Keith Self, speaking to Fox Business News, pointed out the escalating border crisis, referencing the active involvement of various governors and the arrival of a trucker convoy.
A Boiling Point
“I think the border has now reached a boiling point, that you now see governors getting involved,’ Self expressed. “We have a trucker convoy coming down to the border. The American people are going to have to get involved.”
Cross-Country Journey
The organizers of the trucker convoy are calling on all peaceful Americans to join the movement starting Monday. The convoy will travel across the country, culminating on January 29th, and will conclude with rallies in Eagle Pass, Yuma, Arizona, and San Ysidro, California on February 3rd.
