Elise Stefanik, potential Trump’s running mate, got blasted by former GOP representative and Never-Trump conservative Liz Cheney over a reportedly deleted January 6th statement.
Error
Regarding January 6, 2021, Stefanik had a statement condemning the violence, but now the official page says, “The page you have requested does not exist or is undergoing routine maintenance.” However, Liz Cheney kept and shared the screenshots on her X account.
Stefanik’s deleted statement
In a now-deleted post, Stefanik said, “This is a tragic day for America. I fully condemn the dangerous violence and destruction that occurred today at the United States Capitol,” adding, “Americans have a Constitutional right to protest and freedom of speech, but violence in any form is absolutely unacceptable and ant-American.”
The statement went on
“The perpetrators of this un-American violence and destruction must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Stefanik, a New York lawmaker, said, and added, “Thank you to the United States Capitol Police, all law enforcement, the National Guard and the bipartisan professional staff of the United States Capitol for protecting the People’s House and the American people.”
Calling January 6th rioters “hostages”
In January 2024, Stefanik changed the record and referred to rioters as “hostages.” While talking on NBC, the New York representative shared concerns “about the treatment of January 6 hostages.” But, it was Cheney who shared the initial statement and called it Stefanik’s “rare moment of honesty” regarding the attack on the Capitol.
Raskin also called out Stefanik
Jamie Raskin, the Democratic lawmaker from Maryland, wrote on X, “Stefanik must explain herself. Who’s holding the J6 insurrectionists “hostage”? Does she no longer believe violence is “unacceptable” and “must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law”? Does her change of heart have anything to do with wanting to be Trump’s running mate?”
Stefanik fired back at Cheney
Cheney called Stefanik a “total crackpot,” to which she responded, “Liz Cheney’s only remaining relevance is that she will soon have to answer for her role in deleting and hiding evidence from the investigation into the sham January 6 select committee.”
Feel free to share
This brings us back to when Stefanik seemingly deleted the page condemning the rioters. Cheney shared on X, “I’m told that, in response to my prior tweet, @EliseStefanik deleted her 1/6/21 statement — that those who stormed the Capitol “must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” Here is Elise’s statement again. Feel free to share. #nomorecrackpots.”
Echoing Trump
Previously, Trump and several other MAGA Republicans called January 6th rioters “hostages.” Trump, the likely GOP nominee, recently said, “Some people call them prisoners. I call them hostages.” In another campaign speech, Trump had a message for President Biden, “Release the J6 hostages, Joe. Release them, Joe. You can do it real easy, Joe.”
Trump’s “beautiful day”
Trump recalled the Capitol attack as a “beautiful day” with “great, great patriots.” Greene, a GOP lawmaker from Georgia, visited impersonated rioters to prove “the human rights abuse” last March. In late 2022, she said if she had organized the attack on the Capitol, “we would have won,” and “it would’ve been armed.”
Goldman filed a censure against Stefanik
Representative Dan Goldman, a Democrat from New York, filed an official censure against Stefanik “accusing her of peddling voter fraud conspiracy theories that fueled the January 6, 2021, attack at the Capitol and supporting rioters,” the New York Times reported.
Stefanik won’t commit to certifying the 2024 election results
Stefanik, a member of House GOP leadership, told on NBC in January 2024, “We will see if this is a legal and valid election,” regarding certifying results. She added, “What we saw in 2020 was unconstitutional circumventing of the Constitution, not going through state legislators when it comes to changing election law.”
Blaming Democrats
The GOP representative argued that Democrats are a “threat to democracy” and continued condemning Maine and Colorado following Trump’s removal from the ballot.
