During the House oversight committee’s COVID-19 subcommittee hearing, Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked Food and Drug Administration official Dr. Peter Marks. Still, her remarks only earned her harsh criticism and some not-so-nice words from her colleagues.
Doctor’s in the House
Dr. Peter Mark told the subcommittee, “It’s estimated in the United States about 3.2 million lives [were saved], and it’s estimated, globally, that COVID-19 vaccines saved over 14 million lives, conservatively.” Greene, a Georgia far-right Republican, once again managed to stun her colleagues.
Greene’s PhD
Greene, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, told the subcommittee, “I’m not a doctor, but I have a PhD in recognizing bulls..t when I hear it.”
Spreading conspiracy theories
The rest of the time, Greene talked about various vaccine-related conspiracies she’s known for. She cited “forced patients” who had Covid-19 vaccines and reported “all kinds of injuries.” But this was nothing compared to Greene’s 2021 CBS interview, where she shared, “They’re ruining our country, these vaccine Nazis.”
This was right after comparing masks and the Holocaust
In May 2021, Greene compared a mask mandate for Congress’ unvaccinated members to forcing Jews to wear yellow stars in Nazi Germany. Greene called then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “mentally ill, adding, “You know, we can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star. And they were definitely treated like second-class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany.”
The doctor had no chance against Greene
Dr. Marks tried to respond, but Greene had no intention of hearing him out, “Now you’ve authorized that children should receive these vaccines and even babies as young as six months old. That is shameful. That is shameful. I’m not asking you a question. I’m going to continue speaking. Thank you. This is my time.”
The truth about Covid vaccines
While many were skeptical because this is a novel virus, and that’s why the long-term effects of the vaccines remain unknown, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that some adverse effects are possible. Still, they are minor and temporary in the vast majority of cases.
Garcia apologized on Greene’s behalf
Democrat from California, representative Robert Garcia, told the subcommittee, “I’m sorry you all had to go through that. That was a lot of conspiracy theories and wild accusations, which we know have been debunked by medical science, and we should be clear that vaccines work and save lives, and they have saved millions of lives in this country.”
Garcia blasted Greene’s theories
The Democratic lawmaker showed some of Greene’s social media posts, including “turbo cancer” claims from the previous hearing. He later wrote on X, “Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attacks on vaccines have caused enormous harm and deaths. I will continue to hold her accountable for her insane covid conspiracy theories.”
Garcia lost a family member due to Covid
The California representative shared his story, “Anytime that folks, especially folks on this subcommittee on the pandemic, attack vaccines, it’s personally insulting to all of the families that have actually lost loved ones,” adding, “We’ve saved millions of lives because of the vaccine. It’s unfortunate we keep causing this harm.”
The doctor also apologized
“I do need to apologize to the thousand or so parents of children who are under four years of age who have died of COVID-19 who were unvaccinated because there were deaths and are continuing to be deaths in children, and that is the reason why they need to get vaccinated,” Dr. Marks said.
People mostly agreed with Garcia
An X user @Out5p0ken wrote, “MTG and PHD do not mix.” Another, @DianeSevenay, wondered, “Why trust a doctor when you could just listen to this crazy person?”
“MAGA’s knowledge”
Zeke Tayler, an anesthesiologist, wrote on X, “The source of MAGA’s knowledge comes from intuition, faith, and fear – not journalism, science, or the law.” Another user, under the handle @godz_metal, stated, “So she’s listening to herself talk again?”
Greene’s behavior
Kweisi Mfume, a Democrat from Maryland, expressed concerns about Greene’s vocabulary. The lawmaker said, “Though I am not the chair, there should be some sense of decorum, and vulgarity should be discouraged.”
