The Colorado Sun recently published a cartoon ridiculing Representative Lauren Boebert’s reelection bid, following a straw poll that suggested her district switch isn’t winning over voters.
Newspaper Pokes Fun at Boebert
Boebert, a member of the Republican Party, declared last December her intention to run for reelection in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, switching from the 3rd District where she’s been serving since 2021.
Tactical or Desperate?
Despite her justification of the move as the “right decision for those who support our conservative movement, “many perceive it as a tactical maneuver to dodge lower reelection chances in the 3rd District, where she faces a significant primary challenge from Republican Jeff Hurd and a tough general election battle against Democrat Adam Frisch.
Straw Poll Struggle
Boebert ranked fifth in a straw poll conducted after a debate in Fort Lupton, Colorado’s eighth congressional district, on January 25. Out of 100 Republican voters polled, Boebert received just 12 votes, trailing behind Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg, who led with 22 votes.
Cartoon Critique
The Colorado Sun, Denver’s prominent online newspaper, featured a cartoon by Jim Morrissey on Friday, humorously titled “How to explain Lauren Boebert’s straw poll finish?”
In this satirical piece, Boebert is depicted holding the straw poll and exclaiming, “Stop the straw poll steal!”
Echoing False Claims
Known for her ardent support of ex-President Donald Trump, Boebert has become one of the most vocal Republicans in the House. She backed the “Stop the Steal” movement in 2020, which falsely claimed widespread fraud in the election, echoing Trump’s baseless allegations.
‘Earning’ Voters
During the Fort Lupton debate, Boebert acknowledged the need to actively work for voter support, stating, “Everyone will talk like a Freedom Caucus member but there is only one who governs as a Freedom Caucus member.
“I am here to earn your support, earn your vote. This is not a coronation.”
‘Hypocrisy anyone?’
This cartoon represents the latest in a series of backlashes Boebert has faced following the straw poll results.
In a recent hard-hitting statement, Don Coram, a former state Senator who ran against Lauren Boebert for the 3rd Congressional District in 2022 but was unsuccessful, sharply criticized her, labeling her a ‘hypocrite’ and accusing her of abandoning her constituents to avoid defeat.
Boebert’s New Test
Coram specifically criticized her for moving to the 4th District — a move seen as a tactic to avoid a tough reelection battle. Despite this strategic shift, Boebert has surprisingly encountered strong competition for her party’s nomination in the new district.
Dodging Defeat?
Tristan Snell, a former New York assistant attorney general and critic of Donald Trump, commented on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, suggesting Boebert is struggling because she “abandoned her congressional district because she was going to lose.”
Democratic Critique
Texas Democrat Representative Jasmine Crockett also took a jab at Boebert in a post on X on January 29, writing, “Before I go to bed, I thought it would only be fitting to send ‘thoughts & prayers’ to my colleague, Lauren Boebert.”
“It’s my understanding that she placed 5th in her first straw poll of the election cycle. Now how many of y’all think BoBo gonna try to convince us that polls don’t matter[?]”
A Friend’s Disapproval
Following Lauren Boebert’s announcement to seek reelection in a different district, Greg Brophy, a former Republican state legislator from Wray in northeastern Colorado and long-time acquaintance of Boebert, appeared to disapprove of her decision.
Staying in the ‘Swamp’
“It looks like she’s so in love with the D.C. swamp that she will do whatever it takes to stay there. Sometimes your friends do things that disappoint you,” Brophy commented to The Denver Post in early January.
Strategic Silence?
Boebert’s primary rivals were notably cautious about directly challenging her, mirroring the early Republican presidential primary debates where candidates refrained from critiquing Trump. The debate focused on national issues such as border security, abortion, and fentanyl, allowing Boebert to highlight her staunchly conservative voting record.
Her opponents avoided local issues, potentially perceiving them as her weak points.
Better Without Boebert?
Before her district switch, Boebert was anticipated to face a tough rematch against Frisch, who had outpaced her in fundraising. Political commentators generally concur that the Republican’s odds of holding the 3rd District are better without Boebert running.
