Kevin O’Leary Slams Potential Seizure of Trump’s Assets, Saying it Happens in “Venezuela, Not New York”

Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary spoke on Fox Business about the potential seizure of Trump’s assets following the verdict in the civil fraud case in New York. While on “Mornings with Maria,” O’Leary said this does not happen in New York.

The O’Leary Ventures Chairman told Fox, “Remember there is no money lost, there’s no victim here, so essentially just under half a billion-dollar fine for a situation where no monies were lost and the harmed party, supposedly the banks, were fully paid back.”

The businessman had questions

He continued by sharing, “We are wondering how does this makes sense, asking ourselves how long will it take for the appellate court to bring down to a what reasonable number might be, I have no idea what that is.”

O’Leary repeated that investors are “very concerned” and explained that capital comes to the US because of the stable justice system. He declared, “This is not stable, in terms of many people’s eyes, domestically and internationally; seizing assets happens in Venezuela; it doesn’t happen in New York. So this is a little scary.”

Speaking on Fox a week prior, O’Leary vowed not to invest in “loser” New York. While discussing the $355 million verdict against former president Trump, O’Leary said he was “shocked” and added, “I can’t even understand or fathom the decision at all. There’s no rationale for it.”

The promise

“It was already on the top of the list of being a loser state. I would never invest in New York now,” O’Leary told Fox host, and added, ” I’m not the only person saying that.”

New York is a problem

The businessman continued, “There’s nothing she can say to justify this decision. And this has nothing to do with Trump, nothing to do with Trump. Forget about Trump; this is not a Trump situation; this is a New York problem.”

After hearing O’Leary’s remarks, Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Kevin O’Leary is so great, and tells it like it is. Businesses will flee NYC & State after the Corrupt Judge’s ruling!”

“Rogue judge”

O’Leary told on The Hill on NewsNation about the verdict, “It’s a rogue judge,” adding, “In my view, that’s a rogue settlement and should be repealed, and it will be through the appellate courts.”

Previous comments on seizing assets

“Seizing assets happens in many countries where you wouldn’t want to put your money,” O’Leary added. New York Attorney General Letitia James previously said on ABC News, “If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court, and we will ask the judge to seize his assets.”

Trump appealed the ruling

Donald Trump has appealed the $360 million plus interest verdict, which is around $454 million. The former president’s lawyers filed notices of appeal on February 26, ten days after Judge Arthur Engoron’s verdict.

The lawyers for the former president asked the appeal court to decide if Judge Engoron “committed errors of law and/or fact” and whether he abused his discretion or “acted in excess” of his jurisdiction.

Habba released a statement

Former US President Donald Trump's lawyer, Alina Habba (front), leaves Trump Tower for Manhattan federal court for the second defamation trial against him, in New York City on January 17, 2024. Writer E. Jean Carroll is seeking more than $10 million in damages in the civil trial, alleging that Trump defamed her in 2019 when he was president and she had just come out with her allegation, saying she "is not my type." This is separate to a civil case last year where another New York jury found Trump liable for sexually assaulting Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996 and subsequently defaming her in 2022, when he called her a "complete con job." Trump’s legal spokesperson and lawyer, Alina Habba, issued a statement that read, “We trust that the Appellate Division will overturn this egregious fine and take the necessary steps to restore the public faith in New York’s legal system.”
