Trump leads Biden in Georgia, a Key Swing State That Could Decide the Presidental Election

A January poll by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has Trump leading Biden by eight points. Georgia is one of the states Biden flipped in 2020, and is seen as one of the most crucial swing states in this year’s election.

According to the poll, which surveyed 1,007 registered voters, Biden would take only 37% of the vote. Trump would take 45%, a comfortable victory.

The last poll by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was in November. In that poll, Trump took 45% and Biden 44%.

Collapsing support

Biden’s approval, in general, has collapsed in recent months. In early January, an ABC News poll found that just one-third of US adults approved of Biden’s job performance, the lowest of any president in the last 15 years.

However, in the same poll, Biden led Trump by 15 points on being “honest and trustworthy.” Trump’s disapproval rating also increased from a survey in September, rising four points to 53%.

At this point in his presidency, Trump’s approval rating was about 43%, according to poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight. The site has Biden’s approval rating at 38% right now, which is slightly better than the ABC News poll but still lower than almost any president since the end of the Second World War.

Losing cause

As The Nation reported in November, Biden’s continued strong support for Israel is one of the major factors behind his declining support. Young people and voters of color, the magazine explained, were particularly furious.

In late October, a poll of Arab American voters found that just 17% of them supported Biden. In 2020, that figure was 59%.

According to a report by the Guardian, polls also show a worrying lack of support for Biden among Black voters. Multiple polls indicate that one-fifth to one-quarter of Black Americans plan to vote for Trump. In comparison, 92% of Black voters supported Biden in 2020.

No good choices

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s January poll, about 20% of Georgia voters don’t want to vote for either Biden or Trump. “Aren’t we all tired of voting for the lesser of two evils?” one voter told the Journal-Constitution.

“The Democratic Party is going to use this threat of the worst of two evils to put up whoever they want,” another voter complained. They explained that they considered Biden a “terrible candidate” but would vote for him against Trump, because the latter is a “threat to democracy.”

The Democratic Party has come under fire for refusing to hold primary debates. In April, Democratic candidate Marianne Williamson complained about this on X, formerly Twitter, writing that “too many people are too smart to accept this.”
