Following the news of the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Nikki Haley blasted former president Trump’s praises toward Russian president Putin, whom he directly called out for the death of his political opponent.
Haley’s statement
The GOP presidential hopeful and former UN ambassador said in a statement, “Donald Trump continues to side with Vladimir Putin – a man who kills his political opponents, holds American journalists hostage, and has never hidden his desire to destroy America.”
Haley repeated her claims on X
Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley shared on X, “Putin did this. The same Putin who Donald Trump praises and defends. The same Trump who said: ‘In all fairness to Putin, you’re saying he killed people. I haven’t seen that.'”
Trump called Putin a “genius” over the attack on Ukraine
In 2022, Trump said in a radio interview with The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, “I went in yesterday, and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius.’ Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful.”
Trump did not stop there
The former President continued, “He used the word ‘independent’ and ‘we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace.’ You gotta say that’s pretty savvy.”
The Biden campaign sided with Haley and NATO
In a one-minute ad titled “Walk Away,” the President’s re-election campaign shared, “Trump wants to walk away from NATO. He’s even given Putin and Russia the green light to attack America’s allies.” The ad’s narrator quoted Trump at his rally in South Carolina, saying he would “encourage” Russia “to do whatever the hell they want.” The ad continued with the narrator stating, “It’s shameful. It’s weak. It’s dangerous. It’s un-American.”
President Biden also blamed Putin
President Biden said that Navalny’s death was further proof of “Putin’s brutality.” During a press conference in White Huse, the President stated, “Alexei Navalny was so many things Putin was not. He was brave. He was principled.” POTUS declared, “Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. Putin is responsible.”
Pence also sided with the majority of Western leaders
Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence wrote on X, “There is no room in the Republican Party for apologists for Putin.” Pence further shared, “Putin is a war criminal and only understands strength. Russia’s unprovoked and brutal invasion of Ukraine has killed or wounded hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men, women and children. Russia’s brutality must be met with American strength.”
The former VP previously attacked Trump over his remarks about Russian President
During a CNN town hall meeting in 2023, Pence reminded that “When Vladimir Putin rolled into Ukraine, the former president called him a genius,” and added, “I know the difference between a genius and a war criminal, and I know who needs to win in the war in Ukraine, and it’s the people fighting for their freedom and fighting to restore their national sovereignty in Ukraine.”
The mysterious death of the 47-year-old lawyer
The Russian Federal Prison Service reportedly said that Navalny went for a walk and fell sick. According to some reports, Navalny’s mother saw him in good health and spirits on February 14.
Biden previously warned Putin about Navalny
In 2021, during a summit in Geneva, Biden warned Putin of consequences if Navalny died in prison. The President said that he told Putin, “I made it clear to him that I believe the consequences of that would be devastating for Russia.” He did not clarify the kind of consequences.
Navalny’s wife could not even confirm his death
Navalnaya, who was at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, could not confirm her husband’s death. But Yulia Navalnaya promised that Putin and his allies “will be punished for what they have done to our country, for what they have done to my family, for what they have done to my husband.”
No word from Trump yet
The former president has not addressed Navalny’s death yet. Even Tucker Carlson, who just interviewed the Russian president, tried to distance himself by saying “no decent person would defend” Navalny’s death.
