A significant development has surfaced in the impeachment efforts against President Joe Biden by some GOP lawmakers, following the unveiling of Special Counsel David Weiss’s indictment on Thursday.
Bombshell in Biden Case
This indictment accuses a former FBI informant of fabricating claims about a Ukrainian company paying Hunter Biden and Joe Biden $5 million each, approximately towards the end of the Obama administration.
Ties to Energy Company
Prosecutors highlight that Alexander Smirnov, the informant in question, had minimal interaction with the energy company and only voiced concerns about potential misconduct “after expressing bias” against Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.
The ‘Biden Crime Family’
These previously undisclosed allegations from Smirnov have been a cornerstone in the arguments of top House Republicans, referring to the “Biden crime family.”
Depth of Biden Investigation
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has clarified that the investigation into the Biden family is not solely based on Smirnov’s claims.
Despite this, Comer has often highlighted these unverified allegations, particularly after Sen. Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, made public the FBI’s interview summary last summer.
Revisiting Burisma
The energy company Burisma, central to Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings, was also a key focus in former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment trial.
New Evidence
“To be clear, the impeachment inquiry is not reliant on the FBI’s FD-1023. It is based on a large record of evidence, including bank records and witness testimony, revealing that Joe Biden knew of and participated in his family’s business dealings,” Comer stated to CNN.
FBI Endorsement
Comer also highlighted the FBI’s previous endorsement of Smirnov’s reliability, saying, “When asked by the committee about their confidence in the confidential human source, the FBI told the committee the confidential human source was credible and trusted, had worked with the FBI for over a decade, and had been paid six figures.”
Fight for Biden Investigation
Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican from Iowa, who last year made the 1023 form public after the FBI’s refusal, expressed his determination to push the Justice Department to investigate the bribery claims against the Bidens.
Demand for Transparency
“This indictment isn’t enough,” stated a spokesperson for Grassley. “The public has a right to see all the underlying evidence supporting the Biden Justice Department’s case. The Biden administration must show it’s work.”
Burisma’s Expansion Strategy
Court documents reveal that Smirnov informed an FBI agent about his conversation with the owner of Burisma regarding the company’s plans to acquire a U.S. firm.
Mystery Figures in FBI Indictment
In his report to the FBI, as per the indictment, Smirnov also mentioned that a person labeled “Businessperson 1” served on Burisma’s board and was the son of “Public Official 1.”
While the indictment doesn’t explicitly name these individuals, sources have identified “Public Official 1” as Joe Biden and “Businessperson 1” as Hunter Biden.
Biden Responds
When questioned about the indictment on Friday, President Biden called for an end to the investigation. “He is lying,” Biden stated about Smirnov to the press. “It should be dropped and it has just been an outrageous effort from the beginning.”
A Rocky Road for the GOP
The Republican Party was already facing challenges even before this week’s developments. These explosive charges are just one of the factors weakening the GOP’s attempt to make Biden the fourth president in U.S. history to be impeached.
Losing Ground in New York
Earlier this week, the GOP lost the seat of recently ousted Congressman George Santos in a special congressional election in New York.
GOP Election Blow
Currently, with the ability to lose only two votes, Republicans are dealing with one of the slimmest majorities ever, causing Speaker Mike Johnson to struggle to pass legislation.
Narrow Victory
The impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas turned into a prolonged effort for the GOP, including a failed vote due to an unexpected Democratic presence.
The success was narrowly achieved but would have failed under current circumstances.
GOP Divided
Some Republicans doubt the viability of impeaching President Biden, with CNN reporting about 20 GOP members unconvinced. Even staunch supporters like Rep. Ken Buck expressed skepticism, despite ultimately supporting the investigation.
