GOP representative shares insightful details of his year with George Santos

New York Republican Anthony D’Esposito recalled his year with George Santos and revealed how messy the expelled lawmaker’s office was because Santos never hired staff to deal with his district’s constituents. After Santos’ expulsion, a Democratic candidate won the special election in his district.

Talking to Politico, the New York Republican and Congress freshman said Santos’s problems were “self-inflicted.” D’Esposito added, “We really did attempt to just go about our business and conduct the work of the people who sent me to D.C. to deal with the things that mattered to them.”

During his first year as a lawmaker, D’Esposito had to deal with unforeseen issues due to the controversial Santos. D’Esposito recalled that “our staffs, those of us on Long Island, who dealt with the extra workload, whether it was people who did not want to communicate with Santos or elected officials who felt that they weren’t getting the answers they needed.”

Lost in translation

When asked about New York Republicans’ victories in the 2022 mid-term elections, D’Esposito told Politico that it was “lost in translation” since they were going through “the whole expulsion and the ethics report” and more. But D’Esposito reminded Politico’s readers that in Nassau County and Long Island, GOP lawmakers made wins they hadn’t seen in over 25 years.

D’Esposito complained about how the Santos saga affected him and his colleagues, saying that instead of talking about real problems and working in the House, they would hear about Santos, “especially me who had the district close to Santos and coming from the same county.”

The lawmaker believes the issue will fade away

Asked if he thinks the Santos saga will disappear soon, D’Esposito shared it was already happening and said it was better for Congress and Santos. He wished the disgraced former lawmaker all the best, adding that those in D.C. who should govern should forget about the whole scandal.

The former lawmaker was charged with 13 federal charges against him, including wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to Congress. But, even before the charges dropped, Santos made waves because he apparently “embellished” his resume a bit too much.

A few months after entering Congress, the Republican lawmaker was accused by a veteran of allegedly taking thousands of dollars raised on GoFundMe for his service dog. Santos responded on Twitter: “Reports that I would let a dog die is shocking & insane.”

Santos said his mother was a 9/11 survivor, but NBC News and other outlets obtained immigration records proving that Santos’ mother was not in the States during the attacks. The New York attorney general’s office was already “looking into a number of issues” surrounding Santos.

Santos shared his New Year’s wish on X, “My new year resolution is that President Trump returns to the white house and in 2025 I can be appointed Director of ICE,” he said, adding, “It’s time to reclaim our country and if you believe the nonsense numbers the media is giving you, then you are accepting the big lie!”

Santos had more to add

“We have over 50M+ people who have invaded our sovereignty over the years due to careless and neglectful immigration policy, if given the job I know exactly where to start and run the much-needed raids of removals proceedings this country needs,” Santos added. “Enough abuse and disregard for our sovereignty, we are the United States OF America and not a global dumping hub.”

Psaki is not amused

Jen Psaki said on her MSNBC show, “As the scandal engulfing George Santos continues to get a whole lot of oxygen and a whole lot of attention, I think we need to spend less time talking about the no-name now ex-congressman from New York, who never had any real power, to begin with, and certainly doesn’t now.”

The host continued, “Even though all of the details surrounding George Santos are kind of funny and very salacious and a little weird, we all need to stop paying as much attention to Santos and start paying more attention to Mike Johnson. Trust me, it’s going to matter a whole lot more moving forward.”
