Representative Jim Jordan of the GOP is advocating for a funding cutoff sentence in any forthcoming U.S.-Mexico border and federal government funding legislation.
No Money for New Migrants
Jordan proposes, “I think we have to put on the appropriation bills, the bills that fund the government, we have to put a simple sentence: Time out on all of this, no money can be used to process or release into the country any new migrants.'”
This statement was made during his appearance on Fox News’ Fox & Friends.
A Migration ‘Time-Out
The Ohio Republican is pushing for a ‘time-out’ on admitting asylum-seeking migrants. According to Jordan, the U.S. is on track to welcome 12 million new individuals during President Biden’s tenure.
12 Million Under Biden
Jordan suggests a temporary halt, stating, “When you’re on pace to get to 12 million new people in Biden’s presidency, you should probably say time out…. Maybe we should just stop and say, ‘If you’re coming for asylum, we’re not gonna let you in, we’re gonna call a time-out on this.'”
He also mentioned that a change in presidency, possibly to Donald Trump, could be a turning point in addressing the border crisis.
Awaiting Trump’s Return?
Jim Jordan’s recent legislative suggestion is set against a backdrop of congressional discussions about border security and the surge in migrant arrivals—issues that Republicans attribute to President Biden’s policies.
Razor Wire Border
Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a critic of Biden’s border policies, has maintained razor wire along the border near Eagle Pass, defying a Supreme Court order for its removal.
25 Governors Back Texas
A group of 25 Republican governors have come together to release a joint statement, showing their support for Governor Greg Abbott of Texas and the state’s constitutional right to self-defense.
GOP’s Alarm Call
This move comes amidst what they perceive as attacks from the Biden Administration against Texas and a failure to effectively handle or take accountability for the escalating crisis at the Southern border.
Accusing Biden of Border Neglect
The group of 25 GOP governors stated, “President Biden and his Administration have left Americans and our country completely vulnerable to unprecedented illegal immigration pouring across the Southern border.”
Did Biden Fail?
They continued, “Instead of upholding the rule of law and securing the border, the Biden Administration has attacked and sued Texas for stepping up to protect American citizens from historic levels of illegal immigrants, deadly drugs like fentanyl, and terrorists entering our country.”
Solidarity with Texas
The coalition of 25 Republican governors strongly aligned themselves with Texas, asserting, “We stand in solidarity’ with our fellow Governor, Greg Abbott, and the State of Texas in utilizing every tool and strategy, including razor wire fences, to secure the border.”
Alarming Numbers
Recent data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection reveals a rising trend in Southwest land border encounters, with over 300,000 incidents recorded in December alone.
American Dream at Risk?
In a related development, Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania recently highlighted the importance of securing the U.S. southern border. Speaking to CNN, he pointed out that the high number of illegal immigrants, estimated at 300,000, hinders legal migrants from achieving their ‘American dream.’
Biden Seeks Help
Addressing the border crisis, President Biden, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, expressed his limitations, stating, “I’ve done all I can do. Just give me the power. I’ve asked from the very day I got into office. Give me the Border Patrol. Give me the people—give me the people, the judges. Give me the people who can stop this and make it work right.”
Controversial Border Bill
Currently, a border security bill aimed at closing the border once 5,000 daily illegal crossings are reported is being debated in the Senate, but it faces strong resistance from House Republicans.
Executive Power in Border Crisis
House Speaker Mike Johnson last weekend criticized Biden, claiming the president can take immediate executive action to reverse the ‘catastrophe’ he has allegedly caused, without needing new laws from Congress.
A Public Hot Topic
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, immigration continues to emerge as a key issue. According to a recent Associated Press-NORC poll, public concern over immigration has seen a significant increase, jumping from 27 percent last year to 35 percent.
Immigration Tops Americans’ Concerns
Echoing this sentiment, a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found that 35 percent of Americans now rank immigration as their top concern, marking a 7 percent increase from the previous month and overtaking concerns like price increases and inflation.
