On Friday, Georgia lawmakers initiated their inquiry into accusations against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who’s known for her role in the election interference case involving ex-President Donald Trump.
Whistleblowers Ready to Testify
Senator Bill Cowsert, a Republican, started the state Senate Special Committee on investigations by revealing that several whistleblowers from Willis’ office are ready to testify against her.
Fund Misuse Claims
Cowsert highlighted allegations from whistleblowers that Willis mismanaged state and federal funds. These claims mirror those made in court documents by Trump’s co-defendant, Michael Roman, back in January.
Improper Affair
Roman accused Willis of an ‘improper’ affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she appointed for the Trump case, and who received $654,000 in 2022 for his work.
Admission Triggers Further Scrutiny
They accuse her of misusing state and federal funds, a claim following her admission of a relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, which has been criticized as ‘improper.’
Seeking Truth or Witch Hunt?
“This is not a political witch hunt; this is a quest for the truth,” Cowsert stated at the meeting, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Pushing for Disqualification
Trump and his co-defendants’ lawyers argue that these allegations warrant Willis’ disqualification and the dismissal of all charges. Roman’s January filing specifically alleged a conflict of interest due to Willis’ relationship with Wade, suggesting they used funds from Wade’s law firm for extravagant vacations.
Upcoming Hearing
Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee of Fulton County, overseeing the election case, has scheduled a hearing for February 15 to consider Roman’s motion.
Subpoena Invalidation
In a recent filing, Willis plans to request Judge McAfee to invalidate the subpoenas for herself and Wade, who are among the twelve witnesses subpoenaed by Merchant for the hearing.
Alleged Lack of Merit
Despite admitting to a professional and friendly association with Wade since 2019, Willis’s filing argues for dismissing the motions without a hearing, labeling them as lacking ‘merit.’
Alleged Misconduct
Steve Sadow, Trump’s lead attorney in Georgia, criticizes Willis for seeking to avoid scrutiny over her alleged misconduct, accusing her of failing “to provide full transparency and necessary financial details.”
Republican Inquiry
House Republicans have issued a subpoena to Willis over separate accusations of misusing federal funds and dismissing a whistleblower. Her office has dismissed these as ‘false allegations’ from a disgruntled ex-employee, terminated for valid reasons.
They emphasized previous court rulings have found no substance in these claims and anticipate similar outcomes in ongoing cases.
Republican-Democrat Divide
Despite objections from Democrats, who view the scrutiny as politically motivated, Georgia Republicans are conducting their own investigation.
Democratic Concerns
Democratic State Senator Gloria Butler expressed concern to FOX 5 Atlanta about the potential damage to public trust in the political and legal systems, labeling it a ‘political witch hunt.’
Maintaining Public Confidence
Republicans, however, remain undeterred, with Senator Cowsert asserting the importance of maintaining public confidence in the justice system and hinting at potential misconduct by prosecutors.
Opportunity to Speak
Cowsert mentioned the possibility of Willis testifying before the committee, saying, “It’s not a given. I will certainly give her the opportunity, and if I were her, I would want to be heard,”
‘Financially Independent Professionals’
Wade has characterized his and Willis’ relationship as one between ‘financially independent professionals,’ explaining that expenses for personal travel were generally split equally.
Wade Defends Relationship
Wade claimed, “I have made and purchased travel for District Attorney Willis and myself from my personal funds. At other times District Attorney Willis has made and purchased travel for she and I from her personal funds.”
Questions Over Timing
A recent filing from Roman’s attorneys challenges this narrative, alleging that Wade’s ex-law partner, Terrence Bradley, can confirm Willis wasn’t truthful and that their romantic involvement started before she appointed him in 2021.
‘Salacious’ Accusations
Willis has dismissed Roman’s accusations as ‘salacious,’ claiming they were aimed at gaining media attention.
