After Donald Trump criticized Nikki Haley’s husband for his absence from the campaign trail, the Republican presidential hopeful is now pushing for a debate in South Carolina.
Haley’s Family Duty
Nikki Haley’s husband is actively serving in a voluntary yearlong deployment in Africa since last June, stationed at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti. This backdrop comes as Donald Trump’s remarks gain traction among right-wing media supporting him.
‘Mocking’ Military Service
Haley addressed her supporters in Gilbert, S.C., during her state bus tour, stating, “If you mock the service of a combat veteran, you don’t deserve a driver’s license, let alone being president of the United States,”
A Veteran’s Role
Despite being overseas, Mr. Haley frequently features in Ms. Haley’s campaign narratives. She often speaks about him in her stump speech, highlighting his post-war challenges and how his experiences shape her foreign policy and immigration stances.
Direct Challenge to Trump
In response to Trump’s remarks, Haley challenged him directly, saying, “Donald, if you have something to say, don’t say it behind my back,” she said. “Get on a debate stage and say it to my face.”
Haley’s Mar-a-Lago Visit
Earlier, at a Conway, S.C. rally, Trump mentioned Michael Haley while recalling a visit from Nikki Haley at Mar-a-Lago.
“She comes over to see me at Mar-a-Lago – ‘sir, I will never run against you’ … She brought her husband,” the GOP frontrunner said.
Haley’s Absent Husband
“Where’s your husband? … Oh, he’s away … He’s away … What happened to her husband? What happened to her husband?! Where is he?! … He’s gone! He knew! He knew!” Trump added.
Haley Claps Back
Reacting to the former president’s remarks questioning the whereabouts of her husband, Nikki Haley retorted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. She pointed out that Trump, leading in the Republican nominations, has no military experience.
Military Family Sacrifices
“Michael is deployed serving our country, something you know nothing about,” Haley wrote “Someone who continually disrespects the sacrifices of military families has no business being commander in chief.”
Michael Haley’s Meme
Michael Haley himself chimed in on X with a meme: “The difference between humans and animals? Animals would never allow the dumbest ones to lead the pack.”
Additionally, Haley, the ex-governor of South Carolina, reposted her supporters’ disapproval of Trump.
Biden Chimes In
President Joe Biden also commented on X regarding Trump’s query, stating, “The answer is that Major Haley is abroad, serving his country right now. We know he (Trump) thinks our troops are ‘suckers,’ but this guy wouldn’t know service to his country if it slapped him in the face.”
2020 Allegations Resurface
Allegations surfaced in 2020, as reported by The Atlantic, accusing Trump of belittling military personnel and labeling America’s war deceased as ‘losers’ and ‘suckers.’
Trump’s Paris Trip Cancellation
President Donald Trump’s 2018 cancellation of a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris was initially attributed to bad weather and helicopter travel issues, but these reasons were later claimed to be false.
Hair Concerns Over Cemetery Visit?
Four informed sources revealed that Trump’s actual concerns were about his hair in the rain. He also allegedly questioned the value of honoring American war casualties.
Controversial Remarks on War Casualties
During discussions that day, Trump reportedly asked, ‘Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.’ In another instance on the same trip, he labeled the over 1,800 marines who died at Belleau Wood as ‘suckers.’
Trump Questions WWI Significance
Belleau Wood, a pivotal battle site in World War I held in high esteem by the Marine Corps, didn’t seem to hold significance for Trump, who also questioned, “Who were the good guys in this war?” and expressed confusion over the U.S. joining the Allies.
Outrage Over Trump’s Remarks
“This is a disgrace,” declared New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu on X. “Major Haley is serving his country. Donald Trump is again attacking and insulting military families.”
High Stakes GOP Primary
Both Trump and Haley campaigned in South Carolina on Saturday, leading up to the Republican primary on February 24.
