Ex-DOJ prosecutor weighs in on Trump’s $83 million verdict, calls it “Really bad sign for Trump”

Andrew Weissmann, a former DOJ prosecutor, discussed the verdict in a civil case that found Trump must pay $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll, calling it a “bad sign.”

While on MSNBC, former Mueller prosecutor Weissmann said that Carroll would have to wait to get the money due to appeals, which is not unusual. Then the former DOJ prosecutor stated, “This is a really bad sign for Trump” because his “whole goal is to denigrate the rule of law.”

Avoiding “accountability”

Weissmann noted that Trump is trying to “denigrate the court system” because that is where he is facing accountability. The legal expert continued, “He has to worry about what’s going on in these cases,” and then turned to an “explicit” appeal for “jury nullification.”

The former prosecutor explained that jury nullification means “asking the jury not to follow the law.” He added that he signaled to the jury to “disregard” the judge, but “that did not happen.” Weissmann reminded that Trump was “found that he not only defamed but sexually assaulted” E. Jean Carroll.

Days before the verdict, Weissmann told analyst Michael Steele on MSNBC, “One of the reasons that Donald Trump is so desperately trying to put all of these trials off is because you cannot be sure that two-thirds is so solid.” The ex-prosecutor referred to 66 percent of GOP voters who wanted Trump to be the 2024 nominee.

“Witch hunts” and more

Weissmann added, “Donald Trump doesn’t want to have his day in court, doesn’t want to have to deal with facts in court.” He continued, “He wants to deal with spin and say this is a witch hunt, and this is all bogus.” The legal expert also shared that one case is more significant than the others while referring to the January 6 case, saying, “I think there really could be a needle that moves because of that trial.”

Conway jumped in

George Conway, a Never Trump conservative lawyer, initially shared on X, “I confess I’m overcome with emotion.” His second post read, “Congratulations on a job well done, members of the jury.” But, after seeing Trump’s Truth Social post, Conway was angry.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Absolutely ridiculous! I fully disagree with both verdicts and will be appealing this whole Biden-directed witch hunt focused on me and the Republican party. Our legal system is out of control and being used as a political weapon. They have taken away all first amendment rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”

Conway responded

The conservative lawyer replied, “Not so. The United States is about the rule of law, something you couldn’t care less about. Today, nine ordinary citizens upheld the rule of law.” Conway continued, “You have no right to maliciously defame anyone, let alone a woman you raped. In America, we call this justice.”

CNN’s Kaitlin Collins asked Conway if Trump could stop talking about Carroll. He responded, “Maybe for a few hours. Maybe for a few days. We’ve seen it before. We’ve seen him say and do outrageous things …. And then all of a sudden, he’d tamp it down for a few hours.”

Trump “can’t control himself”

The legal expert added that the former president “can’t control himself because he’s a deeply disturbed, a deeply morally bereft human being who has no conscience, has no morality, has no empathy, has no remorse, and is sadistic, as we saw during the trial and the jurors saw in the trial, right in front of their very eyes.”

Not about politics

“What’s most disturbing about this is that so many people make this about politics,” Conway added, continuing, “They want to support him for whatever reason or because they’ve done it in the past. And they pretend that he is not who he is.”

New York University law professor Ryan Goodman wondered on X, “So far, Trump has defied gravity, but for how much longer? Social science research suggests a politician will pay a heavy price with voters for sexual assault. Major $83m verdict amplifies that prospect.”
