Convict Faces 13 New Charges After Assault on Las Vegas Judge in Courtroom

A convicted criminal who was captured on video attacking a Nevada judge in a courtroom now faces 13 new charges.

Judge Mary Kay Holthus of the Clark County District Court was mid-sentencing 30-year-old convict Deobra Delone Redden on Wednesday when he attacked her.

Redden was scheduled for a court appearance on Thursday to respond to new charges. However, he refused to attend.

Clark County jail records updated online indicate that Redden remained incarcerated without bond as of Friday. His court date has been rescheduled to Tuesday morning.

The assault took place during a hearing where Redden was being sentenced for attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm. In November, he had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge.

According to court records, he initially faced charges related to a baseball bat attack, including felony assault with a deadly weapon.

Redden Deemed Competent in October

Earlier, a judge had ordered an assessment of Redden’s competency, and he was ultimately deemed competent in October.

During the hearing, Redden expressed his determination to do the right thing, saying, “I’m a person who will never stop trying to do the right thing, no matter how hard it is.”

Holthus, acknowledging his statement, expressed doubt due to his criminal history. The Judge said, “I think it’s time that you get a taste of something else because I just can’t with that history.”

Video footage captured the shocking moment when Redden suddenly lunged from his position and rushed into the judge’s bench to tackle her.

While lunging at the stunned judge, Redden was heard uttering, “Nah f… that b..tch.”

Attempt to Evade the Assault

Despite the marshal and the judge attempting to evade the assault, Redden managed to throw himself onto both of them, proceeding to assault Holthus viciously.

Repeatedly Striking the Judge

In the video, Redden can be heard repeatedly striking Holthus and shouting explicit language at her while security officers struggled to subdue the agitated offender.

The attack resulted in minor injuries to the judge, and an officer suffered a head gash and a dislocated shoulder.

The new charges faced by Redden include coercion with force, intimidation of a public officer, extortion, and multiple counts of battery on a protected person.

Following the incident, the Las Vegas District Court issued a statement praising the bravery of court staff.
