After the latest GOP star witness got arrested and indicted for making false statements, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer launched a new probe. It concerns Hunter Biden’s emails, but columnist Glenn Kessler pointed out that the timing is off.
Classified documents
Following Robert Hur’s report into President Biden’s classified documents case, Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, Oversight Comer, and Ways & Means Committee Chair Jason Smith asked Attorney General Merrick Garland for any classified documents related to Ukraine.
If time travel was possible
Writing for the Washington Post, Glenn Kessler, known as one of the pioneers of political fact-checking, blasted Comer’s claims, saying that it “doesn’t make much sense.” He asserted that what the Kentucky Republican proposed would be possible if time travel was available.
The issue
Kessler writes, “The 2014 email, which supposedly contained classified information, was written 20 months before these (talking point) documents were produced.” He asked, “How could the email have been informed by classified information that did not yet exist?”
In Comer’s words
Speaking to the reports, the Kentucky Republican said, “Hunter Biden sent some suspicious emails, especially to Ukraine, that look like government documents that meet the criteria of what would be considered a classified document.” Kessler called this statement “hyperbolic.”
The bottom line
The journalist pointed out that “it would be incorrect to suggest that the Ukraine documents in the Hur report indicate Hunter Biden had access to classified information or distributed classified information to ‘our enemies’ in exchange for cash.” In conclusion, “But as we have shown, the Hur report says they are not especially secret or important.”
Vital takeaway from Hur’s report
The report, though painted Biden as an “elderly man” with a “poor memory,” made a distinction between Trump’s and Biden’s case. The former president allegedly refused to return classified documents, while Biden turned in the classified documents and cooperated with the investigation.
What’s next?
House GOP, according to the press release, is “launching an investigation into the Biden Administration’s decision to reinstitute funding to the United (Nations) Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in light of recent reporting revealing some UNRWA staff members actively participated in the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks and kidnappings against Israel.”
It’s Comer’s time
Comer could face an FBI investigation after a critical witness in the inquiry was charged with lying to the FBI. Charges against Alexander Smirnov, one of many GOP star witnesses, allege he was making false statements and manufacturing false records regarding Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine. Many called for Comer to be held accountable.
Moskowitz’s reasoning
Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz asked on CNN, “When did James Comer know this was false, and how long did he conceal that from the American people?” The Florida Democrat continued, “Are you telling me he just found out through the indictment, or has he known all along or at least for a period of time that this 1023 form was made up? Those are real questions we need to get to the bottom of.”
Garcia joined
“James Comer’s lead informant in his sham impeachment against POTUS was just indicted for lying and making up his claims. We demand Comer apologize to the President and end this political stunt immediately. What a joke,” Democratic Representative Robert Garcia from California wrote on X.
Raskin called out House GOP
Jamie Raskin called the House GOP to end the impeachment, saying, “In a detailed indictment, Special Counsel David Weiss — who was appointed by former President Donald Trump — has demonstrated how key evidence at the heart of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry is based on a lie.”
End “doomed impeachment inquiry”
“It is an undeniable fact that Republicans’ allegations against President Biden have always been a tissue of lies built on conspiracy theories, and I formally call on Speaker Johnson, Chairman Comer, and House Republicans to stop promoting this nonsense and end their doomed impeachment inquiry,” Raskin added.
Comer’s not backing down
“The FBI’s actions in this matter are very concerning,” Comer stated, and added, “The FBI had this form for years, and it appears they did nothing to verify the troubling claims contained within the record until Congress became aware of and demanded access to them.”
