Texas Governor Greg Abbott angrily responded to a provision in the border bill that would stop his state from contesting specific provisions in a local federal court.
Abbott’s reaction
On X, the Governor of Texas shared a Newsweek article and wrote in the caption, “Texas stripped of powers in border security bill. This is unacceptable.”
What’s in the bill
The bill states, “The United States District Court for the District of Columbia shall have sole and original jurisdiction to hear challenges, whether constitutional or otherwise, to the validity of this section or any written policy directive, written policy guideline, written procedure, or the implementation thereof.”
What does it mean
Essentially, it means that in specific circumstances, suspected immigrants can ask for a judicial review of their deportation directives. Bill Shipley, a former federal prosecutor, explained on X: “This would prevent plaintiffs – like the State of Texas – from filing suit in Texas federal courts. This is corrupt.”
Cruz said the bill has a “0% chance”
A Texas Senator, Ted Cruz, wrote on X, “There is a 0% chance this failed border bill will pass the House. It effectively normalizes 5,000 illegal aliens crossing the border per day—more than 1.8 million per year.”
Johnson slammed the bill
Before even seeing the bill officially, Speaker Johnson said it would be “dead at the arrival.” After the text was revealed, he shared, “I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, ‘the border never closes.’ If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival.”
More Republicans blasted the bill
A Utah senator, Mike Lee wrote on X, “This is worse than bad negotiation. It’s betrayal. The Senate GOP can still stop it if 41 will stand together.” In a separate post, Lee shared, “I cannot understand how any Republican would think this was a good idea—or anything other than an unmitigated disaster.”
House Republican leadership’s statement
Speaker Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Whip Tom Emmer, and Representative Elise Stefanik released a joint statement regarding the Senate’s immigration bill, saying, in part, “House Republicans oppose the Senate immigration bill because it fails in every policy area needed to secure our border and would actually incentivize more illegal immigration.”
Lankford suggested adjustments
Senator Lankford, who Oklahoma GOP condemned for bipartisan efforts in creating the border deal, said during his appearance on Fox Business, “There are parts that need to be fixed. This is a negotiated agreement, but we have demanded there have to be amendments on this bill.”
Lankford on the bill’s criticism
The Senator compared it to H.R. 2, a bill proposed by the House GOP. He said, “Unfortunately, they got zero votes for it in the House of Representatives on the Democrat side, we got zero votes for it on the Democrat side in the Senate,” adding, “So, we got to figure out, are we gonna just look at this and say ‘we gotta have the perfect bill or are we gonna make some real progress.’ This bill is focused on what can we do right now.”
Schumer urges colleges to accept the bill
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “The border is a mess,” and mentioned how “for years” Republicans complained about the issue. All along, they said it should be done through legislation. Well, we are producing legislation in a bipartisan way, and now, unfortunately, many on the hard right are turning their back on this package.”
No separate aid for Israel
Many Republicans said they provide aid only to Israel, but the White House rejected it, with the President saying he would veto it. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) said in a statement, “Instead of working in good faith to address the most pressing national security challenges, this bill is another cynical political maneuver.”
OMB warns this is not a “political game”
OMB continued, “The security of Israel should be sacred, not a political game. The Administration strongly opposes this ploy, which does nothing to secure the border, does nothing to help the people of Ukraine defend themselves against Putin’s aggression, fails to support the security of American synagogues, mosques, and vulnerable places of worship, and denies humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, the majority of whom are women and children.”
