Despite Former President Donald Trump’s popularity among military personnel, his advantage has waned from 2016 to the 2020 elections.

According to a 2021 study by Pew Research, Trump saw a decline of 14 points in support from veterans and military families in 2020 compared to his performance in the 2016 election.

Jon Soltz, co-founder and chairman of VoteVets, said that the organization’s ads will spotlight Trump’s vocal endorsement of those involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, as well as his previous criticisms of military officials and soldiers.

Political Ramifications

Soltz remarked, “There’s political ramifications to all this. There’s no other way to explain the disrespect to Gold Star families and the erratic behavior and the attacks on our law enforcement at the Capitol — these are values things.”

Substantial Contribution

In the 2022 midterm elections, only four other super PACs outspent VoteVets, which contributed a substantial $24.7 million to Democratic candidates.

Soltz revealed that the organization plans to conduct focus group research and polling among its network of veteran and active-duty service member families.

The campaign will include focused mail and digital advertising efforts, along with television and radio advertisements specifically tailored for rural markets with significant veteran populations.

VoteVets recently unveiled a compelling ad in Pennsylvania, highlighting Trump’s derogatory remarks about veterans as “losers” and “suckers” and featuring the reactions of Gold Star families. This ad aims to illuminate the former president’s views and their impact on military communities.

Vile and Absurd Ad

Florida Republican Representative Brian Mast, a Trump campaign surrogate, called the VoteVets ad “as vile as it is absurd.”

Beyond Military Messaging

VoteVets has expanded its messaging to include criticisms beyond military issues, as seen in Georgia’s 2022 Senate race. The group aired a commercial accusing Republican candidate Herschel Walker of exploiting veterans for personal gain, contributing to his defeat by Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock.

Potential Rematch
