Trump Targets Former Staffers for Criticizing Him

On Sunday, three staffers for former President Donald Trump went on ABC’s This Week for an interview with Jonathan Karl. There, they harshly criticized Trump, which prompted the former president to respond on Truth Social.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, who resigned as White House communications director in early December 2020, told Karl that “a second Trump term could mean the end of American democracy as we know it, and I don’t say that lightly.”

“I’m very concerned about what the term would actually look like,” Griffin continued. She cited Trump’s “historic and unconstitutional” attempts to “steal a democratic election” to hold onto power.

In 2021, Griffin repeatedly spoke with the committee investigating the Jan 6 insurrection. The following year, she revealed that Trump privately admitted that he had lost the election.

“We don’t need to speculate what a second Trump term would look like,” added Sarah Matthews, who served as deputy press secretary in the Trump administration. “We already saw it play out. To this day, he still doubles down on the fact that he thinks that the election was stolen and fraudulent.”

“Our singular focus needs to be, if he is the nominee, on making sure that he is not elected the president again next November,” warned Cassidy Hutchinson. Hutchinson was an aide in the White House and assistant to then–Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

Hutchinson also testified before the Jan 6 committee. She said that after her testimony was aired, she had to go into hiding for fear of her safety.

After the three staffers made their comments, Trump fired back on Truth Social, the social network he created. He posted a collection of screenshots of social media posts, interviews, and articles in which the three staffers praised him.

In one post made by Griffin on the day of her resignation in 2020 and posted by Trump on Sunday, the former staffer wrote that it had “been the honor of a lifetime to serve in the Trump Administration.” Trump also posted a clip from an interview in which Griffin calls Trump a “remarkable man.”

Dodgy Defense

However, as Rolling Stone pointed out, most of the praise posted by Trump was made before he started falsely claiming the election was stolen.

Not All

One exception was a post in which Trump quoted Griffin saying that “the country needs to move on” from Jan 6. She made the comment on CNN in February 2021.

The former staffers warned that Trump would act as a “dictator” should he manage to get back into the White House. “I’ve never voted for a Democrat in my life,” Matthews said, “but I think that in this next election, I would put policy aside and choose democracy.”
