Ken Buck, a popular Republican lawmaker from Colorado, said that the party was warned about the FBI informant’s credibility and shared he’s “embarrassed” by his party’s lack of action to help Ukraine.
Buck is a decade-long lawmaker
The former chair of the Colorado Republican Party, a lawyer representing Colorado’s 4th district for a decade, spoke on CNN about the current issues inside the party. The CNN host Michael Smerconish asked Buck, “I know you have strong concerns as to the status of the war. Speak to those if you would please?” Buck said he was “embarrassed.”
The lawmaker speaks about Ukraine
Buck told Smerconish, “As a Republican, I’m embarrassed that my party is holding up funding that absolutely needs to be made to Ukraine to let them fight the Russian invasion. We’re now also dealing with Russian disinformation about the war in Ukraine.” The country has been under attack for the past two years.
The parallels
Buck continued, “There are many parallels about how Russia is infecting and affecting the politics of the United States. We need to get past that.” The GOP lawmaker added, “We need to understand the threat that Russia has and is to the European countries, our allies, our trading partners, those who share our values much more than other countries around the world.”
Buck is “ashamed”
The congressman added, “I am really ashamed that the Republican Party doesn’t step up, recognize this threat, and support the people of Ukraine who are fighting, who are dying in this war.” These statements came days after group Republicans for Ukraine urged GOP lawmakers, including Buck, to start a discharge petition against Speaker Johnson.
Jeffries and other Democrats could join
Posting on X, New Jersey Democrat Bill Pascrell Jr. wrote, “The votes are there. Are there a dozen Republicans with a shred of courage to sign it and help Ukraine survive? Stay tuned.” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries joined, “It’s time to pass the bipartisan national security legislation pending in the House.”
Johnson’s move
The Senate passed a $95.34 billion foreign aid bill to secure $61 billion for Ukraine. House Speaker Mike Johnson ignored it, claiming that there are more pressing issues in the country while referring to the border crisis. However, he also blasted a bipartisan deal that included foreign aid and was approved by the U.S. border patrol union.
Buck on failed GOP informant
Buck, a House Judiciary Committee member, revealed his colleagues were alerted about Alexander Smirnov, who was charged with lying to the FBI. He said, “We were warned at the time that we received the document outlining this witness’s testimony… We were warned that the credibility of this statement was not known.”
Blasting colleagues
The former prosecutor continued, “Yet, people, my colleagues, went out and talked to the public about how this was credible and how it was damning and how it proved President Biden’s—at the time Vice President Biden’s—complicity in receiving bribes.”
Fueling investigations
Days before his latest interview, Buck was asked by Kaitlan Collins if House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chair James Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan used the information “to fuel” investigations into the Bidens. Buck responded, “That’s what it appears.”
Biden’s call for action
The president said on February 13, “I call on the speaker to let the full House speak its mind and not allow a minority of the most extreme voices in the House to block this bill even from being voted on.” However, Trump, the likely GOP nominee, said during a rally in South Carolina, “They want to give like almost $100 billion to a few countries,” and continued saying that he would encourage Russia to attack those who do not pay their share.
Trump’s hypothetical speech
During the same rally, the former president stated that some president from a NATO country asked, “‘Well sir if we don’t pay and we’re attacked by Russia, will you protect us?’ I said, ‘You didn’t pay, you’re delinquent?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ Let’s say that happened. No, I would not protect you; in fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want.”
Jeffries taunted Trump
The House Minority Leader said about Trump, “‘ I actually think that Donald Trump views himself as a Putin-esque dictatorial figure.” While on The View, Jeffries added, “There is a growing pro-Putin faction in the Republican Party, and it’s led by Donald Trump, some other outside figures like Tucker Carlson, and on the inside, Marjorie Taylor Greene and Jim Jordan.”
Schumer spoke to Johnson from Ukraine
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged House Republicans to “do the right thing” while visiting Ukraine. Schumer declared, “We are here to talk directly to Speaker Johnson. We are going to do all we can to tell him what we have learned and, frankly, pressure him to do the right thing.”
