Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher argued against extremists on the right and the left and called for a “Year of Sanity,” asserting that the country’s soul is at stake.
This is not America
Maher said during the latest episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher” on HBO that watching the news for a day could make one believe that “this whole place was totally batshit.” He joked, “Florida, yes, but not America.”
Debt ceiling remarks
Maher covered all political affiliations, first by wondering why people are still wearing masks while they’re alone in their cars and then stated, “Every time a Democrat is president, the Republicans threaten to tank the world economy by forcing us to take a vote on whether to pay back the money we already spent. No other country does this.”
Poking fun at Trump fans
Maher observed, “It also strikes normal people as insane that Trump fans are perfectly okay with the fact that he was recently asked if he wanted to be a dictator, and he did not say no.”
Speaking of Trump
Maher played the clip of the former president saying, “If you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you are leaving that store. Shot.” The host pondered, “We can’t come to some sort of middle ground on this? On any issue?”
Some examples of middle ground
Maher gave some examples, including, “Socially liberal but not stupid woke. Fiscally sane but not cruel. Is this really that hard? Trans people should be respected and protected, but no penises in women’s prisons, maybe? Legalize pot, but maybe stop giving drugs to hard drug addicts?”
Global issues
The comedian and commentator also shared how he feels about the support for “a terrorist organization in the Middle East that treats women like slaves.” He made a comparison, “I mean, the NRA is bad, but after a school shooting, they don’t march against schools.” He spoke about the recent events at colleges and added, “Insane that we’re cheering for the terrorists now.”
Going after the far left
Maher proclaimed, “The far left now insists men can have babies if they just concentrate hard and don’t listen to the haters.” He asked if that makes us a better country and answered, “No.” Then he talked about the far-right going after women.
Stop being “nutty”
Maher continued by asking the same question regarding the recent Texas case of “persecuting a pregnant woman who wants to get an abortion for a fetus doctors say will not survive. Could everyone just stop being nutty, completely nutty for five f…. minutes?”
Sane people are still the majority
The host reminded his viewers that sane people are still the majority and that he’s baffled by the potential Trump return. Maher said, ” It feels surreal that we’re in court every day trying to prove Trump wanted to overturn the election while he’s on the campaign trail every day telling everyone they should have overturned the election.”
The Gaylor debate
The comedian and commentator does not care about Taylor Swift’s sexuality, so he asked, “If Taylor Swift is gay, this is somehow a better country?” the New York Times published a 5,000-word opinion piece speculating that Swift is gay in early January, forcing the singer to shut down the rumors.
