The DOJ’s latest filing to the Supreme Court read, “Texas’s new actions demonstrate an escalation of the State’s measures to block Border Patrol’s ability to patrol or even to surveil the border and be in a position to respond to emergencies.”

A  2.5-mile stretch of the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass became the center point of the dispute between Texas and the U.S.. In 2023, Texas installed a floating barrier. The DOJ warned Governor Abbott that it “poses a risk to navigation, as well as public safety, in the Rio Grande River, and it presents humanitarian concerns.

Speaking about the latest move from the Texan authorities, the Mayor of Eagle Pass, Rolando Salinas, opposed Abbott’s actions. He wondered why the state closed the 50-acre park, considering the number of migrants is dropping. He confirmed the Texas authorities gave Eagle Pass officials no warning.

The Republican Governor gave a radio interview to Dana Loesch, a former spokesperson for the National Rifle Association, explaining, “The only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border because, of course, the Biden administration would charge us with murder.”

Abbott added, “We are using every tool that can be used, from building a border wall to building these border barriers to passing this law that I signed that led to another lawsuit by the Biden administration, where I signed a law making it illegal for somebody to enter Texas from another country. And they’re subject to arrest and subject to deportation.”
