Ted Cruz Could Easily Lose His Senate Seat in a Tight Race

Ted Cruz, Texas Senator, and Colin Allred, his likely Democratic opponent, are tied in a new National Public Affairs poll. In 2018, Cruz nearly lost his Senate Seat to Beto O’Rourke by less than 3%.

In the polling, which surveyed  807 likely voters, Cruz and Allred stood neck to neck with 44 points each. Republicans against Trump asked on X, “Can Ted Cruz lose his Senate seat?” They cited the numbers, adding, “The same poll shows Trump leading Biden by 7% in the state of Texas.”

It’s a dead heat

National Public Affairs shared on X, “Incumbent Senator Ted Cruz is in a dead heat against likely Democratic opponent Congressman Colin Allred, with each candidate at 44%. Allred is boosted by a +34 lead among Indy women and taking small – but valuable – GOP votes from Cruz.”

In 2018, the Democrat Beto O’Rourke lost to Cruz by 2.6%, and it was the closest U.S. Senate race in Texas since 1978. It was considered a “red” seat since the mid-90s, but O’Rourke evened out the ground, and it was a tight race until the end.

Other polls are less optimistic for Democrats

The University of Houston’s January survey found Cruz leading with 48% compared to Allred’s 39%. In a potential match with another possible Democratic opponent, Cruz would win 48% to Roland Gutierrez’s 38%.

Emerson College survey in January found Cruz leading the race with 42% compared to Allred, who had 40% of votes. The same poll showed Cruz leading over Gutierrez by one percent.

FEC reported that Allred raised over $4.7 million in three months while Cruz gathered $3 million. While this is still not considered to be “competitive at this point,” according to The Cook Political Report, it has “potential to become engaged.”

Cruz has other plans for the future

While promoting his book in November last year, Senator Cruz said he would like to run for president again. He stated that 2024 was not the right time but added, “I loved running for president in 2016. We came incredibly close. We came within inches of winning. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life, and I fully hope and expect to run again at some point.”

The race in the Democratic primaries is highly exciting, as both candidates enjoy great popularity. Still, there will be only one winner in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate out-right on Super Tuesday, March 5. For Allred, the “ultimate goal” is beating Cruz. While Allred’s chances are greater, there are still many undecided voters.

The two candidates have opposing views

While talking about the border, the two Democrats expressed opposing views. Gutierrez said, “There’s not a border wall in the world that’s going to solve what is happening at the border. Not one obstacle is going to change anything other than waste our tax dollars. We need a comprehensive immigration reform plan.”

Allred’s vision

Allred expressed, “I’ve consistently said, and I want folks to know this because I think it’s important, physical barriers have a role to play in border security. That is different, in my opinion, from a wall across the entire border.” The two disagreed on the bipartisan deal, with Allred supporting it while Gutierrez opposed it.

One is moderate, and the other is progressive

When it comes to where the two Democrats stand on the political spectrum, Allred, a former athlete, is closer to the center, while Gutierrez is proudly progressive.

Texas is divided

National Public Affairs poll found that Texas might not turn red any time soon, but the state is highly divided. Regarding “Shipping Immigrants,” 51% “totally approve,” while 47% totally disapprove. Their most significant issues are the border, followed by the “threats to democracy,” inflation, and abortion.
