House Speaker Mike Johnson warned against the bipartisan Senate deal that would pair border enforcement efforts with aid to Ukraine.
Johnson sent a letter
The House Speaker sent a warning letter to senators negotiating a border deal, claiming that if the leaked information turned out to be accurate, it would be “dead on arrival” in the House. The Louisiana Republican shared how the House GOP “will vigorously oppose any new policy proposal from the White House or Senate that would further incentivize illegal aliens to break our laws.”
Blame it on Biden
The Speaker of the House wrote in the letter, “Rather than accept accountability, President Biden is now trying to blame Congress for what HE himself intentionally created.”
Border funding linking aid to other countries
The reported bipartisan deal would likely link aid provided for the border crisis with foreign assistance to Ukraine, as well as Israel and Taiwan. Senators Kyrsten Sinema and James Lankford, who are leading the negotiations, said the bill’s text will be released next week.
McConnell talks about the border deal
The Kentucky Republican and minority leader reportedly told his colleagues, “When we started this, the border united us and Ukraine divided us,” adding, “The politics on this have changed.” According to reports by Punchbowl, McConnell shared, “We’re in a quandary.”
Walking away
“I took him as acknowledging the political difficulty and at least opening the door for the possibility that we might have to walk away from this thing,” commented JD Vance, GOP’s Ohio Senator.
Cruz on the bill
Ted Cruz said at a news conference that the bill was “not designed to fix this problem. … The chances of this bill passing the House are 0.000%.” The Texan Republican continued, “This bill represents Senate Republican leadership waging war on House Republican leadership.”
Under pressure
Johnson is in a position similar to Kevin McCarthy’s before ousting in October 2023. Many conservatives are skeptical when it comes to aid for Ukraine, and Georgia’s firebrand, Marjorie Taylor Greene, even threatened to attempt to oust Johnson if needed.
Greene vs. Johnson
The Georgia Republican stated, “If he funds $60 billion to fund a war in Ukraine to continue killing a whole generation of Ukrainian men — to continue a war that is a losing war, that [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky’s ready for peace talks — yeah, I would introduce the motion to vacate myself.”
Calling the shots
The 45th president wrote on Truth Social, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people, many from parts unknown, into our once great, but soon to be great again, Country!” Trump added, “I have no doubt that our wonderful Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will only make a deal that is PERFECT ON THE BORDER.”
Trump’s alleged interference
The former president and likely GOP nominee in the race for the White House was allegedly at the center of the newfound issues regarding the border deal bill. “We don’t want to do anything to undermine” Trump, Punchbowl News quoted McConnell saying. Senator Thom Tillis stated, “Don’t pretend the policy isn’t strong. If you want to admit you’re just afraid to tell President Trump the truth, that’s fine.”
Trump’s video made things more challenging
Trump posted a series of social media posts calling on “all willing states” to deploy their national guard forces to Texas “to prevent the entry of illegals, and to remove them back across the Border.” 25 Republican governors released a statement supporting Texas Governor Gregg Abbott.
Supporting Abbott
The statement from the governors said in part, “Because the Biden Administration has abdicated its constitutional compact duties to the states, Texas has every legal justification to protect the sovereignty of our states and our nation.” This comes after the Supreme Court ruled to allow the Biden administration to remove razor wire installed by the Texas National Guard to discourage migrants.
Rubio chimed in
Marco Rubio, a Florida Senator, wrote on X, “A “deal” will allow Biden to pretend he’s doing something about the border, but it won’t solve the problem. If he won’t even enforce our existing law he is NOT going to enforce even tougher ones.”
Democrats slam Republicans
Texas representative Veronica Escobar said that Republicans do not want a solution, adding, “It’s hard for me to believe that anyone on the hard right wants to address our broken immigration system because it’s an issue they can keep pointing to over and over and over again.”
Democrats to save Johnson
If faced with ousting over the potential deal, some Democrats expressed they would be willing to save the House Speaker. Dan Kildee, Michigan Democrat, explained what Johnson would have to do in return, “He would have to be more willing than Kevin McCarthy was to sit down with Hakeem Jeffries and have a conversation about what it would take for us to be helpful. Kevin said to pound sand. He didn’t want the help.”
